Patrick Crayton wants out Dallas
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 30, 2010 11:04 AM ET
The crowded Dallas receiver group has Patrick Crayton wanting to leave.

ESPNDallas' Calvin Watkins reports Crayton has stopped working out with the Cowboys in hopes of getting dealt. The moment Dez Bryant was drafted, speculation started regarding whether Roy Williams or Crayton would be moving on.

Owner Jerry Jones has said Williams isn't going anywhere, but that doesn't mean Crayton will get his wish to leave. Jean-Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News doesn't believe the Cowboys will trade or cut Crayton.

We don't think they should.

Bryant was essentially drafted to replace Williams. He's an outside receiver. Crayton is easily the most reliable slot receiver on the team, and getting rid of him would hurt the offense.

We suspect Bryant will cut into Williams' snaps. Crayton should still have a significant role.

Even if Roy were to go, which he will since Dez is his replacement, Ogletree is still the future in the slot. Crayton is a solid receiver but his time here is just done.

Sorry, Patrick. RW is not leaving.
You probably are at some point. And that is a shame. you have been contributing and RW has not.

It's all about finances. As Jimma Carter once said, "Life is not fay-ah"

That's the part that really bothers me. Crayton has been a solid soldier for the Cowboys since he was converted to WR from QB and had some tremendous games in the process. Williams on the other hand has been a tremendous let down. I would hate to see Crayton's tenure come to an end like this, but like my coach used to say, "The show will go on with or without you."

Can't hack a little competition Crayton?

You mean like when the team got TO and he went back to the bench without complaining?

Or when he became the starter and then the team got RW and he went to be bench without complaining?

Or when we inserted Austin into the offense and took away his return duties and he came back and took two punts to the house for us after Rossum went down?

Or when he outperformed RW last season with a smaller role in the offense?

If you're going to get mad at Crayton, let it be about the Giants game 3 years ago and not about the guy's effort, attitude, or willingness to help the team. Unless and until his desire for a trade gets acrimonious, we should be supporting this guy.

It's not a little competition. And seeing as he's 31 I don't think it unreasonable for him to try & crack another teams starting line up.

EXACTLY 'holeintheroof'.....THIS speaks volumes about Pat's character: or lack thereof....no wonder he dropped the ball vs. the Gspots a few years ago. He was an UFA for a reason IMO.....

RW has been a let down thus far but then there have not been the high expectations out of Crayton as there are with RW.

A lot of people are starting to "hate" on Craytron and I don't see why. Many think that Dez Bryant's presence makes Crayton expendable; but I see it as Bryant's presence making Crayton more valuable now, more than ever.

Crayton has been more than serviceable at WR in Dallas, and he's the ultimate #3 WR. The last time he played #3 with two better WRs at #1/#2 WR, Crayton had his best season in the slot. Dallas now has that chance again with Austin and Bryant on the roster.

Crayton may want out of Dallas to be a #1 or #2 WR, and I'd also like a million dollars too; we'll both soon find out that we don't always get what we want. In Crayton's case, he'll soon learn that, if he stays pat at #3 and has a career year in terms of his numbers, then he'll have higher value next year and later in his career to turn that into a good contract (either through trade negotiations or free agency). I fully expect his agent to remind him of this, and for him to have a solid year in the slot for Dallas as a result.

someone will talk to him and settle him down, but if he wants to go, let him if we can get a 3

People do realize you're only allowed a finite amount of roster activations for games, right? Can someone explain to me how you can even justify activating Crayton for games when he's not playing special teams, not returning kicks and not involved in the 3 WR packages? You've admittedly spent last year's draft just looking for special teams players, but now you can't activate one of them for games to play on special teams because you to to reserve a roster spot for a guy projected for ZERO snaps per game? He may very well still be a servicable football player ... just not for us. That's not a bad thing. That happens when you're a good team with a lot of talent. Just release him already and get his mouth and sore feelings out of the lockerroom.

When was Crayton an Unrestricted Free Agent????

Crayton really doesnt have much of a shot on this team. Hes not a better WR than Miles or Dez. Hes not a better returner than Dez either. And the coaches wont be allowed to bench Roy.

If we could get back a draft pick, say a 3rd to 5th rounder, I say let him go. No way he should be cut though.

I appreciate all Crayton has done for Dallas. My favorite memory is him smoking Sean Taylor for the winning touchdown in the final seconds of the 2004 Commanders at Dallas game.

But he's a loud mouth. And he doesn't back it up on the field. A #2 (at best) receiver should not be talking trash. You don't get blown out by the Patriots at home and then rant how you can't wait to play them again, if THEY can get to the Super Bowl.

He's serviceable, but I think Dez and the potential emergence of an Ogletree does make him expendable.

If he is quitting on us, (demanding a trade, not working out with the team) then I don't want him.

Let Crayton go for a draft pick? Dallas is going for it all THIS season with a legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl and Crayton is the ultimate #3 WR. that's true especially now with two capable (#1 and #2) WRs in front of him in Austin and Bryant. No way do I let Crayton go this seaon if I'm Jerry Jones. Not THIS season.

If anyone's job should be imperiled, it's Roy's, not Patrick's--which makes sense because Dez was brought in to push and ultimately replace Roy, not Pat. That said, Pat has a contract and should honor it without whining.
