Patriots/Buccaneers thread

Wow, from 56 yards in the monsoon and he hit the goal post...inch from making it 37 in a row.

Does Folk actually have those numbers? He went into a tailspin with us before we let him go from what I remember. Even his first year in NE I think started off rough.

Yes he does.

He calls Zach Martin before every FG attempt for good luck. The call dropped tonight.

The only advantage Mac Jones has going into the Patriots over when Dak went into the Cowboys is the HC….
Well, Dak did have a unhead of 4 ALL-PROS on offense (Zeke, Smith, Freddy, Martin) ...no the weak arse political, fan-vote Pro-Bowls, but the real deal....ALL-PROS
No Cowboy team had ever had that and I'm not sure any NFL team, period, had had that.

Our defense was average at best though back in 2016

Odds aren’t situational. They stay the same no matter what.
Yeah the odds are not situational in football but the decisions you make based on those odds most definitely are. You’re not going to go for it on 4th and 3 with ten seconds on the clock in lieu of kicking a FG to win the game, as an example.

Situational…

Mac Jones is going to be real good. This may be the last year the Bills get the run of it. Depends how long Belichick holds on.

Agreed. Made a rookie QB throw almost every down in a close game against defending champs.

yeah, the odds are so good that teams routinely punt on 4th and 3 or less.

Well to be fair. Most of the time they’re doing that. Isn’t with the game on the line, in the rain, and comparing it to kicking a 56 yarder.

Yep...that would've been 37 in a row.

that’s not what just happened. We can make all sorts of hypotheticals. The success rate of converting in that situation regardless of the clock or weather is largely the same.

If 4th and 3 or less was such a gimme, there’d be far fewer punts. Why aren’t there?

Of course they're situational. The odds of making a 56-yarder in a dome are different than the odds of making one in the rain. The odds of making 4th-and-3 only had to be better than the odds of hitting that FG to be the right decision; they didn't have to be good.

And there are fewer punts--a lot fewer--than there were even a few years ago, because teams are finally realizing that going for it on 4th-and-3 makes more sense than punting does a lot of the time.

That’s the whole point of analytics. Coaches need to start using them more often and it will absolutely be situational. If it’s 4th and 3 inside your own 20 then the risk/reward isn’t appropriate. If it’s 4th and 3 at the opponents 45, now you have something to think about.

I’m a lot more worried about the Patriots game now than I was 4 hours ago. Fortunately their defense won’t be able to hold up against the Cowboys OL.

But they’re going to use the Dallas aggressive DL against them by doing screen after screen. I’m not sure how well Diggs knows Mac’s style since he didn’t start until after Diggs left.

Has a HEALTHY, post-surgery Smith given up as single pressure yet? We already see how the Cowboys are doing running behind Zach…
