Foxborough, Mass. – It turns out that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick didn't need to wait until Sunday's official deadline to begin reducing the roster to the league-mandated 53-player limit. The Patriots today announced the release of quarterback Kliff Kingsbury, defensive lineman Dwight Howard, cornerback Earthwind Moreland, offensive lineman Jamil Soriano, linebackers Lawrence Flugence and Grant Steen, tight end Joel Jacobs, defensive back Scott Farley and running back Mike Cloud.

The team also announced it has re-signed quarterback Jim Miller and signed free agent running back Kory Chapman, who was released by the Baltimore Ravens.

The Patriots active roster currently stands at 67 players, including nine NFL Europe roster exemptions. The team will have to make 14 additional transactions before Sunday's official 53-player roster deadline at 4 p.m., which will likely include placing players on inactive lists such as the injured reserve or physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Teams can begin signing players for the eight-player practice squad starting at 4 p.m. on Monday following the customary 24-hour waiting period for players to clear waivers.

Too bad about Cloud. But that's a scrub city list of cuts if ever I saw one.

Isn't that the object - get rid of the scrubs? ;)

The list must not be complete, however, no mention of Law. :p

Well RE, sometimes I get the idea the Pats HAVE no scrubs.

I mean, none that the genius Belichick can't make a Pro Bowler out of.

Really Cloud was cut? I thought he would have been their third HB. Isn't Cobbs hurt? Damn Rhode Islander. :)

I'm afraid his career peaked at Boston College, AJM.

Too small, not fast enough, not enough moves.

Sounds like a certain someone who as gained the most rushing yards in the NFL ever.

Deuce Deuce is the exception to the rule.

Not this time, 31.

Mike is a tough nosed player, decent runner, but he isn't particularly 'anything'.

The Pats have Dillon, this kid Cobbs they are high on, and the quick Kevin Faulk for change up.

Both Cobbs and Faulk are dinged up, which makes it clear that they just saw no upside in Mike. He did not play poorly last year I think he had five TDs and about 4.3 or 4.4 average, on maybe 110-20 carries.

Actually, Mumbles claims he released him now instead of in the last cuts to give him a better chance to get picked up elsewhere.

Maybe Miami will take a look. But like Cason, it will be a niche role with a very desperate team.

He only had like 30 rushes or so I think. I could check...

EDIT: 27 rushes for 118 yards (4.4 ypc); 5 TDs.

Cobb is on IR, Cloud making too much $ FOR A #3. THey signed a young kid to get a look at.
