Patriots | K. Washington signed
Mon, 12 Mar 2007 11:39:48 -0800

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the New England Patriots have signed WR Kelley Washington (Bengals). The contract can be for as short as one year and as long as five. It includes a signing bonus of $300,000 and can be worth $22 million if the team keeps him for the full term of the deal. If the Patriots wish to keep Washington beyond 2007, they'll have to pay him an option payment, believed to be $4 million.

It's amazing the sudden turnaround in the Pats FA philosophy. I think they may be the most active players in the FA market this year.

So far, they have signed 3 WRs in FA: Welker (sp?), D. Stallworth, and Washington.

I think they discovered the hard way that they need to get somebody on the team who can run a decent route and catch the ball reliably. It's not like they're giving out huge contracts or anything though, most of these will be painless to NE even if they don't work out.

They still have two 1st round picks. New England might be tough to beat next year and we get them on Thanksgiving.

Wow. I mean. Someone wants to win them a superbowl.

That being said - they were dang fortunate this offseason. There just happened to be players available who fit needs for the team, and they went out and got them. They have not made a single questionable signing IMO. The Wes Welker deal, IMO, was brilliant.

Looks like Troy Brown is either going to become a full time corner back or get cut. Unless they cut Caldwell and Gaffney, Brown will have a hard time staying on the team. He is steadily falling down the depth chart and they have not gotten Randy Moss, yet. Good player and good contributor to the Pats success. Everyone gets old.

Idk what his contract looks like, but if so, that's a shame. I would like to see him finish his career there.

At 37, Brown may have finished his career there.

Kelley Washington is a borderline bust.

But he'll probably catch 10 TDs with NE.

Didn't they give up a 2nd and a 7th for him? How is that brilliant?

It is not a brilliant trade. That is probably being too generous to callit brilliant. It is a good one though and that is because they have two 1st round picks. That gave the pats flexibilty. Losing a 2nd round pick does not hurt them that much as it would if they only one first round pick. It is almost equivalent to giving up a 3rd round pick. The Pats also may gain one or two more 7th round picks after they get compensation for the free agents they lost last year. They were in a good position to over spend without hurting themselves.

Do you think they could have gotten someone that was at least as good as Welker late in the second round? I certainly do. To me, that makes it a questionable deal.

To me, Welker is about as good as Patrick Crayton. If someone was to give us a second and a seventh for Crayton though, I think I would poo myself.

They probably could draft a guy in the 2nd that could be better than Welker. The difference is that Welker is ready now and most receivers take a year or two or three to be ready and impact a team. The Pats are going for it now and Welker fits that role better at this point. He is young and experienced and ready to help the team this season, where as a rookie would most likely not be ready. It is not a questionable deal, nor is it brilliant. Somewhere in between.

Pretty much how I feel about it. The guy can play offense and special teams, has shown he is productive on a crappy team, and fits the Pat's offense perfectly. He can be either a starter & ST player, a 3rd WR and ST player, or any combination thereof.

You might be able to get a player like him in the second, but it isn't as sure a thing as trading it. If he were older, it would be questionable, but for me, a second rounder for a guy to play on offense and special teams for 6 years at a productive level is a no brainer, and the 7th will likely be recovered.

More teams should make more trades more often.

The only thing I don't understand is why they made a trade - was Miami going to match the offer?

There was an article that said by trading for Welker, the Pats could actually work out a longer term contract for less money than the original offer sheet. I haven't seen anything that lists the final details of his contract with New England.

to win the Super Bowl IMO. Great signings on offense and a dynamite signing on 'D' by getting Thomas at LB. Now they'll address a couple small holes on defense in the draft and they are SET. That's a 12-14 win team next year.

I wouldn't go that far, other than henry's legal woes, there top three receivers are darned good. Washington had injury issues, but given the talent of the other receivers there its not hard to see why he didn't play more.
