USA Today's Tony Pauline has been told that UNC G Johnathan Cooper is one of the Cowboys' "top first-round targets."
It is an obvious fit, as Cooper projects to guard or center. Some rank the UNC interior lineman over Chance Warmack due to his ability to move in space and hit targets at the second level. We wouldn;t be surprised if Cooper is off the board when the Cowboys make their first selection.

Not that we all havent figured this out but Pauline does have legit sources. More reputable than most draft gurus.

I don't know how good a value he is at 18 but that's not a horrible spot to draft a G esp a G/C. Depends on who else is available and what position they play. I would prefer a G over a S. I'm still stuck on OT but won't be upset if they go DT, OT or G esp Cooper. Not sold on Kenny V at 18.

If whoever they draft at 18 has a long career as a good or better starter then we have won that battle.

As a UNC fan, Cooper is legit. It's a close call between he and Warmack. Warmack seems to have a little bit more attitude, but Cowboys can't go wrong with Cooper.

I'll take Cooper > Warmack.

...but if Cooper is gone at 18, will the Cowboys take Warmack? I hope so but...something tells me no. Maybe they could trade down to low 20's and still get him in that scenario

They can get a pure starting-quality guard in the 3rd if Cooper (guard/center) is gone at 18. I think they go DT or safety if that is the case.

I am hoping that there is a mini-run on QB's and WR's before Dallas picks...the more, the merrier...that will certainly free-up more of the lineman that we all want to see with #18

Agreed. He's a much better fit in a zone-blocking scheme.

Actually, I'd make Free a June 1st cut and sign Winston. Reports are Winston wants to play in a zone-blocking scheme and he's better than Free.

Getting Cooper at 18 would be tremendous value...most have him as a top 10-15 player.

Listen I would like to see a guard drafted, but do you know how many years it has been since a guard was drafted in the top 15 picks?

It has been 12 years (Leonard Davis & Hutchinson I believe), Guards don't get drafted in the top to middle of the first round.

If you want a guard you better hope, when we are on the clock we trade back, that would be the indication we are looking at Guard.

Just look to last year everyone thought DeCastro was going to go in the top 15 and he did not. Nfl teams do not value guard in the top 20 picks of the first round.

They can trade back and get top guards.
