Pay cuts vs re-structuring

Question:
If a player is asked to take a pay cut as opposed to re-structuring his deal, what are the salary cap ramifications?

ex: T Newman, L Davis, R Williams

I think you volunteer to forgo your actual salary. Thus immediately reducing the hit on the salary cap, but without advancing the difference over the term of the rest of the contract.
