Paying attention to offense is paying off

I think during the Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips eras we simply ignored this offense in attempts to put together a stellar defense that never panned out. Even in the beginning of Garrett's tenure as head coach we were still shoving draft picks at our defense in attempts to give Rob Ryan a chance to fix this 3-4. It never happened. And while I think given time Rob Ryan would have been successful, I think injuries and age doomed the 3-4 experiment.

Right now we are 3rd in the league in points scored per game.

2012 we were 15th
2011 we were 15th
2010 we were 7th
2009 we were 14th
2008 we were 18th
2007 we were 2nd
2006 we were 4th
2005 we were 15th
2004 we were 25th
2003 we were 21st

I think our unwillingness to build our offense through the draft is what has hurt us a lot over the years in offense. For a while we were really good because we brought some high priced free agents in, but they did not have any longevity.

I really think that all changes when you trade up to draft Dez Bryant, you draft Tyron Smith, you draft DeMarco Murray, you draft Travis Frederick, you draft Gavin Escobar, you draft Terrance Williams. I think we all see Frederick and Williams contributions now, but they will only get better. I think Escobar will also get better and contribute more.

From 2010-2013 we have drafted 6 offensive players in the first 3 rounds of the draft, one of which should have been a top 5 pick, another was a top 10 pick. Just this year we spent 3 round 1-3 draft picks on offense.

I think our success on offense is simply what we get when we give Tony Romo tools on offense to work with.

On defense however we are still middle of the pack due to the failed 3-4 experiment. It is frustrating to me that we couldn't get a 4-3 year out of spencer or ratliff, and that ware seems to be on his last legs. I've grown to completely hate the 3-4 now. And I hate that we still need to put our entire draft next year into the defensive line, because that means we're probably not going to be able to add much on offense yet again.

We are 3rd in points per game due to 5 non offensive TDs. Besides the Denver game, our offense has left much to be desired. Not a SB caliber offense by any means

Can you remove all the non offensive touchdowns from all the rest of the teams as well? Can you tell me that if we didn't get a punt return for touchdown that the offense couldn't have scored a touchdown on that drive?

Ok fine, forget the 5 non offensive TDs. Using the eye test youve been satisfied with the offense sans Den?

We have four wins. Only one can you point to the offense playing very well, STL, and even then Id say the D was just as big of a reason, if not more so.

You realize that romo is tied for 2nd in the league in touchdown passes right?

He has 2 tds or more in 4 games.

Yes. Few are bigger Romo fans than I am. All Im saying is we are 3rd in PPG because of 35 points scored by D/ST. Ill reasearch the D/ST points for the rest of the top ten teams PPG

The offense has failed this club since the last several games of 2007 not counting this season which is TBD. We gained yards but failed to score enough, scoring%, and RZ efficiency. Last year the defense failed, too. What's amazing is we were playing for the East week 17. You can thank Romo, Dez, and Bailey for that. Or you can curse them if you wish.

We are marginal with points scored offensively. That's true. The problems are still penalties and execution esp in the RZ. But we are better statistically and by my eyeball test we are definitely better. We are scoring almost 29 ppg. If you throw out the Denver game then we are scoring a little more than 25 ppg which is marginal for success. Throw out the Denver game and we are giving up 17.3 ppg which is right at your goal of 17 or less ppg.

My eyeball says we still need to improve our Sc% a little more although its not bad, improve RZ%, make less mistakes, run the ball better and more consistently, give up less passing yardage and do a tad better defending the RZ. We are getting there. Waters and getting Murray back may cure our running game which will increase RZ and SC efficiency as well as increase TOP and keep the ball away from the other team.

Of the top ten teams for PPG, only Chi has more non offensive TDs (5) than us (4). Wash also has 4.

For once I have liked our RZ offense. Too many killer penalties though.

I feel like we have an abnormally high amount of 3 and outs, which have bogged us down tremedously.

IMO the offense should be doing better given the talent. They are good, but they could (and should) be better. I wish they would play with the same sense of urgency in every game as they showed in the Denver game. This team should be going for the jugular every time they have the ball.

Yeah, too may false starts down there, holds, yada. But I was wrong about our RZ% (TD only) which is 68% overall (#3 league), 83% the last 3 games, and 100% last game. SC% is 38% which is decent. TO% is 11%. So the last few games have been good RZ wise.

6th in scoring if you only count rushing TDs, Passing TDs, PATs, and FGs for the entire league.

174 points in 7 games.

126 points outside of the Denver game.

IMO, the offense isn't nearly as good as advertised by Troy Aikman and Joe Buck against the Eagles. They have improved in certain areas for sure but to think they're a powerhouse that's going to light up the scoreboard ever week..........not gonna happen.

Read my sig..

Cowboys are averaging 18 points in three roard games. Not exactly parade worthy production.

Cowboys scoring is up because of turnovers, special teams, and fluke performance vs. the broncos. And we have improved in the red zone.

Road scoring..

I can only think of 4

Barry church fumble return - NYG
Brandon Carr int return - NYG
Sean lee int return - SD
Dwayne Harris punt return - WAS

Enlighten me.
