Paying for the draftees?

Folks, I've been lurking a while, but I'd like to ask a question. I understand we are barely under the cap. How in the heck are we supposed to sign and pay 7, 8 or 9 draftees? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

We have three huge ways to get cap room

1) New Contract for Spencer
2) Extend Romo
3) Re-so or cut Free

Any one of them would be enough.

They don't need the room until close to camp time. But they already have 1.7 million that will open up June 2 for releasing Marcus Spears. They also can free up cap space by signing Romo (possibly 6 million) and Anthony Spencer (possibly another 5 million) long term and also by releasing, restructuring, or forcing Doug Free to take a pay cut.

I'd bet we get more then 6 million this year if we extend Romo, unless they decide to take more of a hit this year, which at this point seems somewhat logical.

To summarize some of the previous posts:

Marcus was as "designated June 1st" cut. This will result in 1.7M more available under the cap after June 1st.

If Doug Free is cut after June 1st, it will result in 7M more available under the cap.

The 1st year salary cap hit of players drafted at the Cowboys picks
based on 2012 salaries is about 4M total for the 6 picks.

During the offseason, only the top 51 contacts are counted under
the salary cap. The bottom 6 of the current top 51 players accounts
for about 2.8M. If the 6 draft picks replace those 6 players in the top
51, then the additional amount needed is about 4M - 2.8M = 1.2M.

Basically, the additional cost of drafts picks will be covered just
by the release of Spears.

Other:

Romo - New contract: Between 4M to 8M additional available.

Spencer - New contract: Between 4M to 6M additional available.

The problem is that there is 5.3M of prorated bonus money that will add to the cap hit of the new contract in 2013.

Romo's current cap hit is 16.8M. Subtracting 6M would be 10.6M. In order to get his cap hit to 10.6M, the new contract would have to have a cap hit of 10.6M - 5.3M = 5.3M.

Thanks for breaking all that down xwalker. Very clear. That's nice to hear that the rookies can be signed so cheaply. I was thinking in the $4-5 million range but had forgotten to account for the rule of 51.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Once we resign tony and spencer then cut free, we will have more then enough to sign draftees and free agents (low end)

Sorry, but I need to ask another question. What is rule 51?

During the offseason, only the top 51 contracts are counted against the salary cap. I believe a team can have as many as 90 players under contract in the offseason, but only the top 51 count when figuring the salary cap. So when a rookie is signed, if his contract is in the top 51 on the team, that boots the former #51 contract down to #52. So the new cap figure adds in the new players salary, minus the old #51 salary.

Here's xwalker's example for the Cowboys:

The bottom 6 contracts of the current top 51 players accounts for about 2.8M.

Based on the teams draft slots, the top 6 draft picks should cost about $4M against the cap in 2013.

If the 6 draft picks bump those bottom 6 players out of the top 51, then the additional amount charged against the cap for the rookies is the net difference, or about 4M - 2.8M = 1.2M.

At least I think I've got that right!

Thanks for the explanation! I get it!
