to me right now. The tackling will come around, and lots of other nit picky criticism won't amount to much either. But the special teams are a legit concern right now: and like Jerry said after the game, they're a big reason we lost the Giant game. Penalties are still a problem too. We can get away with seven to ten per game against most of the league. But if you're in the playoffs.......well, you can't. Lastly, I still am pretty leery of this coaching staff. Special teams? That's certainly coaching, effort and planning. The penalties? See coaching again. I'm not here to rip Wade: never have, but when I see a CONTINUATION of problems from last season: like kick coverage, punt coverage, and too many mental mistakes resulting in penalties.....that's coaching IMO. Thoughts?

That's why it's called preseason.

Funny we had a lot of those same penalties under the task master Big Bill

Exactly. I was rewatching the 2006 game between the Cowboys and the Cards in Arizona. The announcers were talking about all the penalties they Cowboys had made and lead the NFL in most penalties, etc. Quoted Parcells about being so upset and that he had never coached such an undisciplined team which kept shooting itself in the foot. Actually committing penalties is all mental; the Cowboys have done it under Wade but just as much under Parcells.

Penalties are a big concern, and to play in the first pre-season game and have so many is a telling fact. How many PI's were there? What are they teaching or doing in training camp? Jumping the snap count is stupid. I can accept a holding penalty, as it often saves the QB from being injured, but not knowing the cadence of the count is pretty poor concentration.

most of our penalties were PI calls.......one of which should not have been called....the Hamlin call.

I guess you guys have a valid point. If we were committing just as many penalties under tuna, then it's more on our players I suppose. Lack of intelligence, lack of concentration or both I guess. Still, it's the coaches jobs to snap them out of it: no matter WHO the coaches are.

this penalty thing has always mystified me too because we have penalty problems under both extremes; Bill-the-taskmaster and Wade-the-cupcake...and we supposedly have a lot of veteran and "elite" players...it makes no sense - especially when you see other teams master the ability to keep penalties to a minimum...I always figured it had to be the coaching and probably still lean that way for lack of a better explanation.

I'm guessing the kick coverage breakdowns were due to the fact we had young guys in there. The only way those guys make the team is if they can play special teams. I'll bet we see at least some improvement vs. Denver.

The PI on Pacman in the third quarter was bull**** as well. The receiver pushed him to the ground and then tripped over him. Should've been offensive interference. I watched that play 5 times on my DVR. Calling defensive pass interference was ridiculous.

Now our special teams play is another story. They....well....belong in the Special Olympics.

I understand the worry cause the special teams coverage really did worry me Saturday night but, again, this is just the first preseason game. I expect a lot of this stuff to work itself out by the end of the preseason. Now if the next 3 preseason games if we're still covering punts this badly then I'm going to start to worry a little bit.

I think you over react as many around here seem to do. It was a pre-season game, my god Dallas has had SB winning team look like crap in the pre-season it does not matter. Pre-season is about individual players not about team.

Did you have some special view of that play that most did not because I never saw a replay that showed anything more than Pacman falling right before the WR fell.

I think it's fair to put weight on a preseason performance if it looks like there are carry over problems from the year before, as is the case with the special teams. It's obvious Jerry is pretty concerned about it.

Who are our gunners on the punt return team? Last year it was Hurd and Reeves was it not. The thing I noticed about our punt coverage was that our gunners were not getiing there in time to seal the edges. I don't know if that was because the punts were so poor or not because they had very little hang time.

When two different coaching staffs have the same problems with the same players, its time to blame the players.

From what I saw the punts where not that good (not much in terms of hang time) and you had guys chasing the ball instead of holding their lane to provide containment. No doubt special teams was an issue last year but I'm not going to get worked up over Sat game when I know there were guys out there on special teams who chances are will not even be on the roster once all is said and done.

Our special teams were very good in 2006.
