Cal hires Raiders' coach away after one week
Associated Press
Saturday, February 20, 2010
(02-19) 22:43 PST -- The Cal football team hired Clancy Pendergast away from the Raiders as its new defensive coordinator, replacing Bob Gregory, now at Boise State.
Pendergast, who had been hired less than two weeks ago by the Raiders as a defensive assistant, was let go by 4-12 Kansas City in January after one year as the coordinator of a unit that ranked 30th in overall defense among 32 NFL teams.
He guided Arizona's defense from 2004 to 2008, but was fired following the Cardinals' Super Bowl run.
"He has been a defensive coordinator on football's biggest stage and will be a tremendous asset to Cal football," head coach Jeff Tedford said.
The Arizona defense forced an NFL-high 13 turnovers that postseason, but the defense ranked 19th overall during the regular season.
Before coaching 15 seasons in the NFL, Pendergast was an assistant at USC and Oklahoma in the '90s.
"Hopefully, I can bring the ability to be a very good teacher of the game, give our players direction and put them in position to use their strengths along with their talent to make plays," Pendergast said.
