Former Penn State linebacker Sean Lee continues preparations for the NFL draft. He is expected to visit with the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers this week. JOE HERMITT, The Patriot-NewsSean Lee has spent the majority of the Spring of 2010 on the run. Workouts in Lancaster. Team interviews in Dallas, Indianapolis and Phoenix.

It’s been a nice change of pace for the former Penn State linebacker. Lee, who is prepping for the NFL draft later this month, was shut down two springs ago after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a PSU scrimmage.

Last year at this time, Nittany Lions head coach Joe Paterno wouldn’t allow Lee to do much during Penn State spring practice sessions. His knee was still mending, so one of the team’s most active players was not cleared for contact.

Now? Catch Lee if you can. He’s also snuck in a couple of trips to State College — for a Pro Day workout March 17 and to work out for the Atlanta Falcons two days later — and is meeting with the New York Giants today and Monday. Lee also has future meetings scheduled with the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

"It’s been hectic but I’ve really enjoyed it," said Lee, a three-year starter at outside linebacker for Paterno and a two-year captain.

"You get to see what the different teams are all about. Every interview has been a little different. Some interviews have been more personal than others. They want to talk football and sometimes some other things."

Like, well, Lee’s health.

Lee had to deal with a serious left knee sprain last fall. Many draft experts believe the Upper St. Clair graduate is a top-50 pick but only if his knees are sound. At the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis in February, Lee was a popular guys with team doctors. Right this way to the MRI exam, Sean.

"I don’t blame them, it’s a big investment and they want to make sure," Lee said, who has been working regularly with midstate performance trainer Steve Saunders. "I think my knees are fine. I feel great. My weight is good and I think I’m stronger and faster since I left Penn State."

Lee said he had some Penn State company with him on his trip to the Dallas area to meet with some Cowboys coaches and owner Jerry Jones. Navorro Bowman, PSU’s other highly rated outside linebacker, also sat down with Jones and coaches.

"They met with us in the hotel we stayed at and the one thing I missed out on was a chance to see the [Cowboys] stadium," Lee said.
"He [Jones] is very passionate about winning and doing what’s best for that team, that really comes across."

Bowman, a two-time first-team All-Big Ten choice, plays the linebacker position differently than Lee. Navorro is considered a class weak-side linebacker in a 4-3, someone who can cover and also fly to the ball on running plays.

"I think I’m a pretty physical guy, I’m more of a downhill type [of linebacker]," said Lee, who met with the Arizona Cardinals earlier this week.

"I think I’m versatile, too. Teams have told me they like me as a strong-side [outside] linebacker in a 4-3 and also as the ‘Mike’ [middle]. And in a 3-4 teams think I can be a fit at both of the inside [linebacker] positions."

Lee said teams can only work out players at their colleges or within 30 miles of their hometowns. When a player visits an NFL team, it’s only for meetings and a physical, Lee said.

"I’m hoping for the best for me and for Navorro," added Lee, who will be home in Pittsburgh for the early stages of the NFL draft, which is held April 22-24.

"I think we’re both good football players and our best days are ahead of us."

Yes, yes he is. He has also grabbed the intrest of the Cowboys pretty heavily. Lee actually met with Keith for a little film session. Not something the Cowboys do with many prospects.

would love to see the cowboys trade down and acquire an extra pick in the early 2nd to pick lee up. Branching off on the "predecessor to Brooking" notion, I believe to have Lee learn the Wade Phillips defense from the man who understands it the most is invaluable.

Welcome to the board.

Yes, they are very similar players as well.

thanks SDogo. when it comes to linebackers, you have a great handful of them who have lived by playing the position focused on complete toughness and strength. not taking anything from that, i love when a linebacker also exhibits himself as a student of the game along with the previous attributes. it has a waterfall effect among the whole defense to strive and become better. so frankly, lee is not a must-have for us right now due to the positions we need to fill, but oh would i be happy if we got him.

I thought you meant Wade himself. ;) But yes, learning from Brooking would be great. And Bradie's not a bad model himself.

Like you said, we don't *need* Lee, but I'd love it if we got him. He's big enough to play either position, so he could replace Bradie in a year or two if need be.

SDogo, you're a Penn State guy... How good do you think Lee can be?

I'm torn.

On one hand if you a high intensity, smart, leader with good athletic ability and fundamentally sound

On the other hand, he is not the most athletic ILB I have seen and the knee injury scares me a little.

When I say he like Keith Brookin I'm not exaggerating. Watch them on film at this point in their careers and you would swear you are watching the same guy.

I think Lee could be a great NFL ILB but I also think he will need to be in the right system. Seeing what Wade does Keith I believe Sean would be great in Dallas.

Thanks, man.

Question, and I'm not trying to be a smart ***, but if he's a bit limited can he really be that much like Brooking? I mean, Keith was a #12 overall pick. Maybe you guys mean the 34 year old Brooking that we got. :)

Anyway, I love these guys with the great intangibles. Plus there simply aren't that many 240 lb. ILBs in this draft.

If he's there when we pick in the second round I wouldn't blink.

You make 34 sound old!:laugh2:

Too bad we don't have a high enough second for this guy. Maybe he'll drop.

I'd prefer him at Bradie James' spot. I really want J.Will to be Keith's replacement eventually, he has incredible athleticism. Ware/JWill/Sean Lee/Spencer would just be ridiculous.

Exactly... That's why if we get an ILB (and I'm sure we will), he needs to be a bigger guy. Lee or Donald Butler or Chaney would work.

But yes, hopefully we already have our future Mo backer on the team.

I just drooled a little.:laugh2:

Is that knee a concern guys? I would assume our doctors thoroughly examined it....watched this kid play alot in the Big Ten: he's a tackling MACHINE. Smart too...........

It concerns me. He cleared medical but I'm always cautious of a guy that suffered that kind of injury. Almost the same thing Poz had and he has not had an issue with it though.
