Ok, I admit I'm a Romo fan. Have been since I went to training camp in San Antonio when he was a Rookie. Myself and my son spent four days watching camp and I formed my own opinions of the QB's in camp that year.
As I recall (and I'm old so forgive me if I missed some camp fodder) the QBs in camp that year were Quincy, Hutchinson, Stoener and Romo. Quincy and Hutch were the chosen ones. Hutch had that California thing going. Blond, big sucker with a big arm, but couldn't hit a bull in the a## with a base fiddle (I mean he missed receivers by yards not feet). Plus he had the Ryan Leaf thing of thinking he was really hot stuff. Sort of arrogant in a non TO way (arrogance is fine if your really that good . Quincy had the mobility and a decent enough arm, but no touch and threw a really flat, ugly and often erratic ball. Stoener I liked, but the arm strength just wasn't enough, although he had moxie and was quite accurate.
Anyway, Romo seemed to be able to do just about anything he wanted to. He certainly seemed to have enough juice in his arm to make all the throws. He had very good mobility and could actually throw on the run accurately (I'm talking on his back foot, side foot, falling backwards, you name it. He could just throw the ball). He was also a very hard worker and stayed after practice to throw to other rookies trying to make the team. The other thing that I noticed is he threw a perfect spiral and the ball just seemed very easy to catch. Both my son and myself thought there was something special about him and we weren't alone.
Flashing forward three years, and I was setting there thinking about this the other day and suddenly came to the revelation that the closest quarterback out there similar to Romo may be Pennington. They seem similar in their abilities in lots of ways. I think Pennington reads defenses better at this stage (more experience of course), but both are supremely confident in their respective abilities. I think arms are similar (Romo's a bit stronger), but both throw a ball with touch which is easy to catch. Both seem to have the inate ability to hit a receiver in stride (a biggie for sure). I think Romo may be a tad stronger and a lot more mobile.
Ok. Someone throw some rocks at this and tell me what I'm missing. Figure smarter folks then me will have their own opinions on this. :starspin
