I'm not one of those always-positive fans, but this team is good.
  • Our offensive line is not at the level of the 90's, but it's the best we've had in a long time.
  • Tony Romo is at his best.
  • Our receiving corps rivals the best the Cowboys have ever had - even without sMiles.
  • We have one of the best TE's to ever play the game.
  • We have one of the best LB's to ever put on the Cowboy's uniform.
  • We have one of the best DE's to ever play the game (if healthy).
  • We have one of the best WR's in the NFL and he has hit his stride.
  • DeMarco Murray, if he can stay healthy and despite the opinions of many, is an above average NFL RB.
  • Our 3 CB's are above average.
  • The coaching staff seems to be on the same page, and they're a solid group (shockingly, pressure from GM Jerry for Garrett to turn over play-calling duties seems to have been the best move for everybody).

This season and next are the best chance we'll have to go to the Big Show. Here are the reasons:
  1. The NFC East is incredibly weak, and the entire NFC is below average.
  2. Romo ain't getting any younger. Sure, he may be great for five more years, but you never know.
  3. Waters has made a huge difference. We've only got him this year, and hopefully next (assuming his body holds up).
  4. Ware ain't getting any younger. Assuming he gets back to his old self this year, his body is obviously breaking down. He is still great, but very well may not be in three years.
  5. Guys due to become free agents at the end of 2015: Dez, Tyron Smith, Bruce Carter, Doug Free, Ron Leary, DeMarco Murray, Dwayne Harris. Assuming these guys keep playing at their current level, there is no way we'll be able to afford them all. That's 5 offensive starters, including 3 offensive line starters and 2 who should make the Pro Bowl this year.

It's now or never. I would accept any move made TODAY that would make this team better NOW. Let's do this thing.

If this team can STAY HEALTHY, it has a chance to come together and make some noise. As you noted, the pieces are there - can we solve the puzzle?

if our offense can play like they did against denver and our defense can play like they did against philly ......we can beat anyone.

we just need the same effort on the same sunday.

We've always been near the top of the league when it comes to star power and players 1-10. It's players 11-53 where other teams have had more talent than us. That's changed this year thanks to a stellar off-season. We've got solid depth, the key now is:

A decent offensive line, and the Giants, Eagles and Commanders are a combined 6-14. This is like two blue moons at once.

I agree that the window is now. And I agree we have some compelling components.

But consider the equal reality: the window is not-for-long. I suggest the league ensure Jerry gets a title this season for all the lucrative things he's done for the league. It would also be a fitting gesture of mercy for Cowboy fans who have suffered forever...and will soon be suffering as cellar dwellers again.

the window is every year as long as parity remains, relax, you can win at 9-7 or whatever is good enough to make teh wildcard. you have to beat the team in front of you, not the best team.

I agree that we have 2-3 years to get this done. D-Ware, Witten, Romo, all these guys are getting older. Time to win...now

Good post. I Agee with your points. I agree that this year may be last window. I don't know what next year can be.

But, with all the things you mention... The thing that is going to make the difference is nothing you mentioned. It's do we get HOT at right time. Do we get a little lucky during the playoff run.

Or...the puzzle is solved, the pieces just need to be placed correctly, in a well planned and strategically executed order....

I don't buy this. We have an infusion of young hungry players across this entire roster. The only old guys we have left are Witten, Ware, and Romo, and Romo is the only key piece.

I agree the Cowboys are talented, but the problem is, many if not most NFL fans think the same about their own team. They look only at the starters on their own team and think, "With so much talent, why can't we make a deep playoff run?"

You've highlighted what I believe most casual fans just don't quite understand / see -- the strength of a NFL ballclub is as much about the depth as it is about the starters.

For many years the Cowboys have had, IMHO, above average starters -- however, their depth has been bottom of the barrel. Due to improved drafting and less bad decisions overall by the front-office, I believe the Cowboys depth is as good as we've seen it in at least 10 years and that more than anything will carry the Cowboys to the playoffs.

True, and I definitely agree. What I meant, though, was that many NFL fans only look at the talent on their own team and not at that on the other 31 teams. Sure, their team is talented, but perhaps many of the other teams are even more talented. Then, when their team misses out on the playoffs, they think their "highly talented team underachieved," rather than thinking, "Maybe the other teams were even more talented all along?"
