Per a couple front office execs, the floor for Michael Mayer is believed to the the Cowboys at 26

yea i'd agree on not wanting us to go for WR or reach on DT/OL but TE just doesn't scream 1st round need to me right now...but if he's a immediate difference maker, then i'll happily eat crow. I'm just scarred by all the Witten replacements that came and went lol.
Can't blame you there.

The floor for Mayer, huh?

That term is normally used in addressing the his skill set and ability to grow to its bottom or top projected level as a pro.

His ceiling is projected as all-pro and ten years of consistent play, outside possibility of HOF.

His floor is as a starter with the possibility of a pro bowl.

I have never seen for or ceiling used in speaking about draft slotting.

Really hope this is smoke screen. The issue and potential for busting with Mayer as TE is he runs 4.7 and is 6’4 with average arm length. You expect yr TEs that run that slow to be 6’6 or 6’5 1/2 with long arms that way when when they are covered they can be open by boxing out or running down the seem they can reach out over the top on higher balls. Witten was 6’6 263 and ran 4.63. You want that in a first rounder otherwise just wait to the 3rd or 4th.

I am waiting for Catch 17 to show up and rant how no one knows about mayer but him and he is a loser, etc.
Mayers bad value. I stand by that.

He’s a round 2 player going in round 1.

I don't recall many situations in recent years that made me say "oh man, a better TE would've really taken us over the hump". I saw some potential in hendershot and ferguson, so i guess we can just agree to disagree on it being a gaping hole.
It’s where they were drafted that’s got people doubting yet most 1st round TEs have been mediocre or just complete busts.

The TEs who have been elite aren’t drafted high and are great athletes.

This guy looks like a 700 yard TE that can block. We don’t need to use a first on that. That’s silly.

Maybe not but who are you using to replace Shultz's production and please don't say, Ferguson, he only had 19 catches with 8 starts.

I’d love to have him on the team but not at this price.
No…just doesn’t have the athletic profile to warrant a 1st round selection or be the guy that consistently flirts with 1000 yards.

He’ll be a safe and steady pro which in this class you can get in the mid rounds IMO.

Agreed. I don't see a special player here. And no potential to become special

Witten retired after 2020. Schultz was probably a top 10, definitely a top 15 TE last year. Depending on your age, there is a chance this team has never even really had a bad TE is your lifetime as a fan.

Everyone agrees Hendershot and Ferguson flashed potential. The difference is some of you see "flashing potential" in minimal reps playing alongside a superior TE as some sort of guarantee that they not only will be, but will be immediately, good enough to be quality starters in the NFL. That is a very risky bet. It's far from a stretch to suggest the position where the Cowboys have very little returning experience and production is one of the biggest area of need.

Truth is I was never was that up on Ferguson, he looked like a decent TE. But Mayer better have at least an 800 yard season with 9 TDs or we in the draft zone are rioting.

editing his Tds to 9 because they need a real redzone target.
Do yall just not understand how football works? You're basically saying "I want Michael Mayer to be All-Pro as a rookie or we riot!" Only 3 TEs had 800+ yards last season (Kelce, Hockenson, Andrews). Only 2 TEs had 9+ TDs (Kelce and Kittle).

And no that does not mean you should never take a TE early or they're not valuable or any of that nonsense. As much as many people here hate to admit it, blocking is a thing that exists in football and is important. A primary responsibility of any TE is to block and they add additional value that way.

TEs are also extremely important on plays you absolutely need to convert. 3rd and mediums, converting in the red zone, converting 3rd/4th and shorts. CeeDee Lamb had 935 yards and 5 TDs as a rookie. Did you consider him a bust? Didn't even sniff 9 TDs and didn't exactly cake walk to 800 yards. That's with minimal to no blocking help.
