Per Clarence Hill, Span-Ford competing with Ferguson to be the starter?

Exactly! I wish they would of brought in Mayfield or Darnold to compete for starting QB.

Similar to Schultz before him, who is also a very solid NFL TE.
Fergs was 3rd in receptions and TDs among NFL TEs last year.
Respectable YAC, low usage due to us having 2 #1 WRS who get the majority of targets, plus the larger focus on the run game.

He does need to take better care of the ball though.

And I doubt SpannFord unseats him, just likely they will use more 2 TE seats so we will see more of SF, which is good for the team.
I think the thread should have been about how SF has beaten out Spoon for the 2nd TE slot (and that slot is going to see more snaps).

I never understood the Fergs sucks crowd (or the Schultz sucked crowd before).
Fergs is a very solid NFL TE, not spectacular, but very solid.

Sad thing is him and Derrick Henry are in the same draft class. If anything Henry is asked to do way more physically and he played at Alabama. One is still a great RB and another is washed and forgotten about..

I think his role definitely changed. We want to get the ball to Lamb and Pickens because they are playmakers, and we also have some shaky tackles in pass protection. So it makes sense to have him chip more and then float out to be an outlet in case Pickens and Lamb are covered or the protection breaks down. Doing that means he's turning more toward the quarterback and catching the ball less on the run, so he's not going to gain as much yardage after the catch.

He has to hold on to the ball better than he did last year, but if the offense is moving well, I don't really care if he's averaging 10 yards per catch or 6 as long as he's doing the job he's being asked to do.

I think Spann-Ford was a good find for us. We drafted Schoonmaker to compete for the No. 1 tight end spot because we didn't know what we had there. Ferguson sewed up that spot, so Schoonmaker had to shift to the No. 2 role, which is blocking tight end with a limited receiving role. He hasn't done as poorly as some fans believe in that role. They simply wanted him to be great because he was a second-round draft pick. However, Spann-Ford came along and showed he could be a better blocker in that role and he also has been developing as a receiver.

It's a good situation to have. We have a starting TE who had the third-most catches among tight ends last year and a blocking TE that has some receiver chops but is a powerful point-of-attack blocker. Schoon is the odd man out, not because he's a terrible TE, but because Ferguson and Spann-Ford are just better. I expect Schoon to have a decent career once he leaves here, sort of like Marty B did for a couple of years after he got out of Witten's shadow.

I hope that Trigg steps up so that we can get something for Schoon before he moves on as a free agent. ... I'm not saying Schoon is a great player or going to be a great player. I just think he ended up getting stuck behind Ferguson and he's better suited for that role than for the one Spann-Ford plays.

Because we replaced Schultz with Ferguson. Having an outlet is very valuable for an offense.

That's the price. Fans get too caught up in what players make. Ferguson tied for the third-most catches among tight ends last year. He makes the eighth-most money. As we've all said, he needs to clean up the turnovers.

Cole Kmet with the Bears is making the same per year and had 30 catches for 347 yards last year. Dalton Schultz is making slightly more and had 82 catches for 777 yards and 3 TDs last year to Ferguson's 82, 600 and 8. Mark Andrews is making almost a half-million more per year and had 48-422-5. Isaiah Likely just signed with the Giants for $13.3 million per year after having 27-307-1.

I'm not saying he's overpaid relative to the market, I'm saying he is overpaid relative to his skillset. Kmet is way overpaid too. Likely and Andrews are probably overpaid, but the difference is that they are more vertical threats who teams have to account for in those offenses. Teams don't gameplan Ferg.

I honestly don't care about volume of catches, it doesn't mean anything other than the fact that teams covered other guys. Lots of RB rooms end up with ~80 catches per year, they just don't throw checkdowns to their TE like Dallas does.

Not saying it isn't, but role is important to look at as well. If his role in this offense with two major receivers on the outside is to chip pass rushers to buy the QB more time and then run short routes and turn around to give the QB an outlet, then his YPC is not going to be that high.

If the FO continues to ignore and neglect the QB position there will never be competition or real depth.

They failed to draft a DT in the 1st round for over 30 years and finally had to trade players and picks to get them.

A novel idea may be to actually draft a quarterback higher than the 4th round and develop him for the future......which can come at any given time

I think you are devaluing what he provides simply because he wasn't a vertical threat. The name of the game on offense is moving the ball so you can score, so if his 82 catches are helping the team move the ball, then there is value in that. We had one of the top offenses in the league because Ferguson helped us move the ball. Without those small catches by him, there wouldn't have been any opportunity for big catches by others.

This was the reason that Ferguson was a Pro Bowl replacement last year. You may not value volume of catches, but the league understands that catching and moving the ball is what matters along with scoring TDs, which he did better than all but two other TEs.

Also, if he's not overpaid relative to the market, then he's not overpaid no matter how you feel about his skillset. I think there are a lot of fans here who are simply looking for a target to dislike if they are targeting Ferguson. He had the third-most catches among tight ends and the third-most TDs. I guess in your point of view, we'd have been better off with Green Bay's Tucker Kraft, who averaged 15.3 YPC but totaled just 32 catches.
 
I don't hate him but Ferguson is an average TE playing with a QB that peppers him with targets. Look across the league and you can find one of him on every roster
