Cowboys not trading Marcus Spears

7/23/2010 5:42:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team has no interest in trading defensvie end Marcus Spears as a potential Phillip Merling replacement according to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.

Additionally, Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News reports that Stephen Jones also said the Cowboys would not trade Spears.

"If we would've looked at moving Spears we would've need it done before the draft so we could get a replacement," executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "Once we went through the draft and everything, we need Spears. He's a valuable part of this football team."

i have to be honest. I am really glad to hear this. I think we need him to win.

me too, i didnt really want him traded

It's sad that what's convenient for other teams is what many here feel is expedient for us as well.

Spears is not a draft bust. Any pick that we could obtain for him has a 50% of being just that.

LOL, Stephen made it sound like if Merling's injury had occurred before the draft, Spears would be outta here. I know he didn't mean it that way.

It didn't sound like that to me at all. Just that they would need a lot of time in order to find his replacement.

Yeah, I just read it again. I often roll my eyes when others lack reading comprehension. I guess I'm guilty of it too.:p:

I wonder if the Jones' will change their tune if either Bowen or Hatcher (or both) look like a suitable starter replacing Spears and making him expendable.

Then pay him accordingly!

I'd just have a set value for him. If someone offered a 2nd I would jump on that, otherwise I'd rather keep him and have solid depth. I'd accept nothing less. We hold the cards.

NEVER, and I mean NEVER believe anything Jerry tells the media, if his lips are moving, you know he's lying, because one week from now, Spears could be wearing a Miami uniform...

He probably just won't be re-signed. And I'm sure that they would be glad to see a player be better than a current starter. Who wouldn't want that?

Everything in this world is for sale. Just depends on the price.

That, and if an AFC team is making a playoff push, and needs a 3-4 DE. And Jason Hatcher or Stephen Bowen are beating him out for snaps. Then Spears could be traded.

A lot has to go right, or wrong for Spears, for that to happen.

The Phins don't even have a 2011 2nd rounder and that's what it would take to get Spears IMO. Spears is too valuable for just a 3rd or 4th so I really dont see how we could do business with them...

unless....

That's not real smart. we should get something while we can for him. he will walk away for nothing after this season. not a smart move. and not a smart thing to say.

You don't understand much about football do you? We have 20 of 22 starters returning this year. That is amazing continuity. He is one of them. He is solid against the run. He is a leader on the Defense. Players and coaches will tell you that if you will take the time to listen.

zrinkill really did own you, but from the looks of this post, that really isn't all that difficult.

wait wait wait.

So we're NOT getting Jake Long and a 3rd round pick for Spears?

=)

Not to mention by coming out and saying that, you may force Parcells and Ireland into panic mode. They may be sitting their in Miami trying to figure out the best was to fleece ol Jerry and then they hear that. From what I understand, they are in a real mess at DE right now and they might get desperate. The dumbest thing in the world would be for Stephen or Jerry to come out and say "Yeah, we'd love to trade Spears to Miami. Tell Ireland to call us."

I hear T.O. believed him too, Jerry swore up and down he would not trade 81, then he drew him a picture. :D
