A Perfect Storm scenario for NFCE Head Coaches
Wade Phillips - Bar is set High
Tom Coughlin - Bar is set Somewhat High
Andy Reid - Bar is set High
Jim Zorn - Bar is set Medium
There is a possible "perfect storm" scenario where all the head coaches in the NFC East could all be gone at the same time. Although its not likely I think its a unique possibility for the NFCE. 3 of the 4 head coaches were on the hot seat during last season, the 4th was skunked by a self destructive player and possibly missed repeating a Super Bowl because of it.
This is just a scenario (not a prediction). Because the bar is higher for some coaches more than others, lets take a look at a scenario wherein the teams end up something like this:
NFC East
1st. Dallas Cowboys 11-5
2nd. New York Giants 8-8
3rd. Philadelphia Eagles 7-9
4th. Washington Commanders 5-11
Lets take a look at the scenarios:
1st. Dallas Cowboys go 11-5, win NFC East, but miss the playoffs, or 1 and done in the first round of the playoffs then Philips will be gone. The bar is very high for Wade Phillips, I think short of going very deep into the playoffs or getting to the Super Bowl it will be tough to see Wade being the Cowboys HC next season. In short Phillips needs a NFC Championship or Super Bowl win.
2nd. New York Giants 1 and done, or don't make the playoffs, or win less than 9 games than Tom Coughlin may call it a career and spend more time with his grand kids. Tom Coughlin is not that old, but he is one of the oldest coaches in the league. He already has a ring now so it might be easier for him to pack it in after a disappointing season. He's (temporarily) changed his personality for the past 2 seasons, but one more destructive player could trigger him back to a disciplinarian, or he may just decide he doesn't need that in his life at his age.
3rd. Philadelphia Eagles don't make the playoffs, win less than 9 games, or play worst in the last half of the season than they played in the first half of the season then Andy Reid could be gone. Reid had one foot on a banana peel last year when the team took a slide, and for benching Donovan Mc Nabb. The Eagles are the team that faces highest expectations in the NFCE this year, for the first time the fan base looked ready to dump Andy when things weren't going right, if their expectations aren't met things could get real ugly in Philly.
4th. Washington Commanders - Jim Zorn was never looked at as the long term solution to coach that team. The owner has a penchant for high profile coaches, and even then he changes out head coaches regularly anyway. Jim Zorn has the bar set the lowest, but if the Commanders get off to a bad start he could be gone before the end of the season. Even if the Commanders make the playoffs, but a higher profile coach is available Snyder would still probably go for the shiny new toy than keep Zorn.
Again, I am not predicting W-L records its too early for that, I am just saying in a "perfect storm" given similar results it could be possible. I'm not sure if it ever happened where a whole division got all new head coaches in a season.
