I'd be fine with it if we consistently applied this mindset, but we don't. If we're going to go that route, franchising Spencer makes no sense. We just went through this with Spears, Free, Sensi, and Scandrick. We signed all four of these guys after the lockout, all four are (rightly) considered bad contracts and two of the four are already gone.

Spencer will be thought of the same way in no time flat.

At some point the Cowboys just have to stop handing out bad contracts, it's that simple.

No matter what this team does or does not do, it somehow garners praise from some folks.

While I am glad that the Cowboys are not overpaying at the onset of free agency, the fact is that it is by necessity, not design.

For all of those that repeatedly said that the Cowboys would never be cap-strapped, welcome to the real world.

The thing that scares me is that if they go ahead with long-term deals for both Romo and Spencer, we may be in this same position for the next several years.

All to keep an 8-8 team together.

They shouldn't see new deals. They should be traded or just play out their contracts.

Whoever is the HC next year, he should have someone else to QB his hopes and a very much needed cap relief (from Romo, Spencer and others leaving).

I'm bummed at how quiet the FA period has been. It's only been 4 days, though. We'll get more active down the road. There are a lot of decent players still available, and we'll need to pickup 3-4 eventually.

The team doesn't seem to be in panic mode, so I'm going to assume they understood they'd likely be in this position when they juggled to get under the cap in order to tag Spencer. In AS's case, they probably decided to see what the market did at the position and then revisit it.

The Romo extension is more interesting. I wouldn't have thought that negotiation would be to difficult, especially after Flacco signed. Not much is likely to change between now and the season. They should pretty much have all the data they need to get an extension done, so I don't know what the holdup would be unless they're at such an impasse that they'd rather roll the the franchise tag. As big as that tag is, and with the distinct possibility that he'd actually get an offer even at the highest tender, I can't see how that's realistically a consideration under any circumstance.

Not because I want to go blow money on high priced guys that may or may not work out but because it seems there are a lot of top vets this year that are taking less money on shorter term deals to then test the market later. Moves like Philly, Seattle and others are making are smart, smaller deals to give them more depth and talent. It's a good FA period to be able to fill some holes with different alternatives without breaking the bank. JMO.

Moves like Philly, Seattle and others are making are smart, smaller deals to give them more depth and talent. I would have liked to have seen a starting tackle or LB signed but oh well. My thought on free agency is that, unless we are talking about Reggie White or Deon Sanders, it would not make any difference. Look to the draft....

It does suck that the Cowboys haven't been buyers, but I wasn't expecting anything but 2nd tier FA signings after the initial wave of free agency began anyway.

I don't mind it either seeing how we're not even a week into the new season. We've already seen that players can be signed on the cheap this year since everyone is strapped for cap space-- making a FA wait even longer in a period when no one is getting paid and you may see some quality signings for peanuts for the Cowboys.

This is how I see it as well. We should be able to get some solid vets for reasonable prices to fill the holes that have not been addressed in the draft.
