I don't see Brown making the roster unless we find a way to keep six receivers. Because we have two guys who are built for the slot and not for the outside, I can't see us going with a raw player as the primary outside receiver behind Bryant and Williams. Maybe Beas or Switzer will get a chance to show they are more than just slot guys, but Beasley didn't last year and he was the best receiver on the team.

I look forward to the "no way Player XYZ makes it through to the practice squad - he'll be snapped up by another team in a heartbeat" series of posts come training camp. Every year it seems that Dallas has 27 guys who might just start for the Patriots but they are on the outside looking in when it comes to Dallas. Curiously most of them end up at Denny's for some reason. Perhaps their contracts for the other teams got stuck in the fax machine.

My pet cat, using your criteria, is LSU defensive end Lewis Neal. Neal's primary problem is that he's short at 6-0, even though he weighs 260 pounds. If he had had a great 40 that might not have mattered, but he only posted a 4.7. At his height, he probably needed a 4.6 or better to get drafted. He also slipped through the draft because LSU switched to a 3-4 defense in 2016 after Neal had led the team with eight sacks the previous year at end. He had 3.5 sacks in the 3-4 in 2016. He's a short, stocky guy who has shown the ability to get to the QB facing major competition.

Nope.:)

But I'll give you a hint.

Something Ark Terrible NFL Team

Ha!

one of my favorite movie quotes: "... if Joan of Ark wasn't Noah's wife, then who WAS Noah's wife?"

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

btw, I value run blocking & special teams for down roster WRs as well, and would be fine with this guy on the 53 if he beats out a couple people in camp (Andy Jones, et al)

I watched him against OU 2016 and he was a man amongst boys in that first half. I expected more out of him the rest of the season but he never showed up.

He owned OU that day.... :( He has a lot of potential and theres been talk of using him at TE as well....they are looking for a way to keep him already....

Butler will get one more year, raw size and speed. Brown is very interesting and should end up on the PS. If either one get a lot of playing time, it probably means we lost a player or two to injury. Let's hope that doesn't happen.
I do look forward to seeing Brown in the preseason, maybe he'll prove me wrong.
Yep. Much hinges on him learning alot of positions:. Teams, receiver, playbook, route trees based on defensive alignment, etc. But he's a helluva blocker which is a rare trait among both receivers and rookies, in general.

At the same time, I really like Butler... especially as a fifth option. I've done the final 53 exercise; it's going to be difficult to carry 6, I think. But I hope they can because Browns commitment to blocking suggest a very coachable player.

Yeah...that's a really good point. Hadn't considered it from that angle. So six wr it is.

If Brown shows anything at all in Training Camp his days on the practice squad are gone, ideally he gets to our practice squad and continues his NFL education. I am skeptical of a kid who is 19 to have the maturity to fully understand the NFL WR game and if this proves wrong his future will not go unnoticed by 31 other teams.

He isn't 19, he is 21.

And I think he is a perfect guy for the Practice Squad, he has all the physical skills but needs coaching. Also it seems like there is a trend toward teams stocking their practice squad with guys from their own camp that learned their system, you don't see as much as you used to where a good PS candidate automatically got snagged by another team.

We also have the option to pay him more than the minimum as an incentive, like last year when we paid Rico Gathers essentially what he would have made on the 53.

Born July 19th, 1997. He is 19. I agree; he is likely ps bound, but as I said in an earlier response, the fact that he makes blocking important suggest he is into the details of how to win and that he is coachable. Those are a few very valuable traits.

The 1997 birthdate is from Wikipedia, which has plenty of mistakes. He played three years at OSU and he didn't start college when he was 15 or 16. Every other source says he is 21.

He definitely has the physical skills and natural ability, you can tell the writers on DC.com were told to scale back their reporting on minicamps and even then, there were plenty of reports about highlight catches.

It will be a fun camp battle to watch. Bown, Brice Butler and Andy Jones will fight for that 5th spot, plus there are some reports that UDFA Brian Brown has something. I'm going to Oxnard in early August and will definitely focus on those guys.

As much as it bugs me to say so, I fear it might take Brown this entire year to get his feet wet as a WR but he could quite possibly prove a very valuable member of the special teams. Next year should be his best shot to spell Butler if he's, indeed, destined to do so. It could happen! :)

You are correct, mostly about the RB's but some of the receivers each year. This guy stick out because of his youth and blocking. His performance just up the road against Oklahoma etched in many people's minds as pro ready. I am not ready to place a bet on him in early July but he is intriguing.
Much like, Danny Coale, Matt Johnson, Isaiah Stanback, Martez Wilson, and David Buehler.

What happened with that running back the team drafted last year and then cut? The one that many of us would get picked up in a second?

This is a topic that was much discussed right after Brown was drafted, and many of us felt the same way that you do. That the Cowboys would keep just 5 receivers and Brown would battle it out with Butler for the spot.

But, thus far, Brown has been relatively quiet while Butler has impressed and sounds to be more committed to his game and improving it. Both players have their pluses and minuses, but if I had to pick a leader in the clubhouse right now, it would have to be Butler.

And that's what training camp is for. If Brown can impress there, youth, upside, and a four year contract could be enough for the Cowboys to keep him. His chances also improve if Hanna can't get back and stay on the field for all of training camp and the Cowboys decide to move on and keep just three TE's.

Stupid Wikipedia. :)

If the reporters were told to "scale back their reporting" that would suggest they are already planning on trying to stash him away. Oh well....back to the drawing board.

Butler is most certainly the leader as it pertains to the receiver position; he already knows the playbook, the route combinations, what is expected of him. Brown, on the other hand, is just getting started. While I know the odds are against him, the fact that he is pretty polished as a blocker could factor in on the ultimate decision...especially if Noah is able to contribute on Special Teams.

As it stands, my preference would be to keep both. @gimmesix had a good point above that if Dez or TWill get's hurt, that would mean Brown will be thrown to the fire a little too soon...and I agree. That might be asking a bit much. So here's hoping they figure out way to make room for 6.
