With a new year and new coaches, a lot of pet cats are going to get thrown under the bus because the new regime will have more interest in "their guys" than the 'holdovers".

So I thought it might it would be nice to pay our final respects to our pet cats whose chance to shine is probably past.

For me, it's Hunter Luepke.

I think McCarthy wanted to make Luepke a thing. But he didn't manage it, and now in Hunter's 3rd year with new coaches, I don't see it happening.

Nice topic.

Leupke may get competition from Mahfa.

How about Deuce, seems he has been a pet cat, and not much bigger than one either. :muttley:
He will get competition from everyone. Can Schotty use him better than MM.

Really can't think of too many more from the past few years.
Maybe Cropper, some seemed to been high on him
Stephens, seemed to draw interest, maybe not as. pet cat, but he seems to show something, but also seems injury prone.

Maybe Greir, but no QB competition for him for a roster spot.

I'm thinking one or 2 of those WR's

Brooks is tough, but uhhh it's a numbers game, would we let go of Flournoy already???

All depends on if we pick up a vet/trade for someone, that really will cost someone their job. Does an UDFA step up and steal the spotlight from someone???

Well that is the great thing i'm not going to name names but this is going to be a level playing field it's going to be competition when you change your entire coaching staff other than your core stars there's going to be a lot of wide open competitions for spots all over this team and I like that it's going to be more interesting to keep up with camp in preseason for sure..... Because new pet cats are going to be formed those undrafted free agents at receiver from Oregon he was brought here for one reason and one reason only because of junior his assistant wide receiver coach but there are a lot of people watching that film on him and they say we may have something there but that's what they say so we get to find out he couldn't be the answer he could be better than Tolbert..

So stay tuned for the new pet cats but mine is obviously I'm a homer for the Longhorns but he's also that good that he's making the team but I can't wait to watch him play is Jayden blue.. He's got the Tony Pollard position and he's going to keep it but all his measurables are Jamir Gibbs so we're going to find out people think we didn't improve the run game he may not be a 3 down back but this guy alone makes our run game better this year than last year and then you have all these other players so yes he's my pet cat this year along with the Oregon receiver that I'm going to be paying close attention to... Wouldn't it be crazy if we got another player maybe on Miles Austin level where he's a surprise undrafted free agent but he's good right away I love those types so I'll be watching him.

Nah Fam, Luepke will rise like the undertaker if that's the case.
1. There's a need for players with his body type for STs.
2. He can play RB, FB, or H-Back meaning he can run the ball, catch, pass protect, and block.
3. Schotty doesn't even mention Luepke in the mix because he's viewed different and has a safe spot imho.
Too much versatility and effectiveness when giving opportunities, plus he's always available and reliable. Schotty has been here and he knows the value of Luepke.

I fear for Luepke's future too. His role is so small I don't think they can save a spot for him on the roster. I too feel he was under utilized by McCarthy. But maybe he knew something we don't know. Still I would loved to have seen him run the football more.

I don't know that Mafa is a replacement for Luepke. Luepke is a FB. Mafa isn't. I don't know if Mafa could take a lead blocker type role, of if Mafa can come out of the backfield as a receiver.

I think it all depends on whether or no Shotty believes in using a lead blocking FB.

I think Justin Rogers will need to show up. They let him go once already so now that they have two fresh 7th round picks Rogers will need to be clearly the better player or he's gone, IMO.

I think it goes without saying that Deuce is a long, long shot to make the team. Blue basically puts the Deuce experiment to rest, unless he has a serious problem, like fumbling.

when new position coaches appear, those who were not given a real shot have their chance. Now IF the coach is good, he can recognize talent and use it.
But it is up to the players to show it

I don't know any coaches that think this way. They'll play and develop any player. Their job is on the line. PeeWee ball, yes....play your kid, your bosses kid, your side piece's kid, that might be yours, but not at any other level.

the real good coaches do that
but lets be honest here; coaches do have pets and sometimes that blinds them to others

Agree. I think that a GM or owner has more of that personal investment in keeping his pick on the team

Coaches are more impartial

Now I believe the terminology is probably being overused to say pet cat but what they really mean is there's fringe players been on this team hanging around because they were brought in by the old staff the new staff no longer going to see them as a good fit and they're going to be pushed out for the guys they're bringing in that they feels a better fit and sometimes we call those pet cats but really that's a fan term... That doesn't change the fact that a lot of the guys we're talking about are probably on their way out unless they really find a way to fight to get on this roster whereas before they were a little comfortable because the coaches that brought them here we're going to keep them here as long as possible..

Sam Williams. One of the prettiest pet cats I ever saw. Thought he’d be a fantastic player and it just hasn’t worked out. With the selection of Eze he’s in for a cat fight.

Mazi Smith. Not really my pet cat, LOL. But if he doesn't turn it around this season, he's gotta go!!
My actual pet cat is currently rehabbing....D. Overshown. And I hope he stays around for a while after he returns!!

Leupke 6-1, 238
Mafah 6-0, 234

They used TE's in the FB role at times. I am sure Mafah may be given a chance.

I always kinda liked Brooks. Just seemed to execute when given a chance.

But yeah, probably at least one of those two is not gonna have a seat when the music stops.
