Shouldn't goat be GOAT? I think you're selling Moore short because of his height. Just get Moore a stool he'll be a'ight, a'ight

Moore is working on his height disadvantage...

Although he definitely needs more seasoning, I was impressed by what I saw from Schultz. And as some of the scouts were saying, he's actually a good pass catcher, even though Stanford didn't use him in that respect.

I was gonna say Rico but I think the Rico ship has sailed and has become the good ship lollipop

I would love for him to learn to make use of his size and strength on the field, but I agree that the staff has shown very little trust in him, so I don't expect that to change. With Witten back, I can't see how he can get off the bottom rung, which means he's the first one out at the position if Dallas drafts a tight end ... and he might not make the team even if Dallas doesn't draft a TE.

I don't see how we have room for him.

I don't see how we have room for him.

I think the key is what we do at the running back spot. If Olawale is going to be considered both a fullback and tailback, then we'll go with one less in the backfield (Elliott, rookie/FA, Olawale), which means we're more likely to carry four tight ends again. Even when we've gone with three tailbacks and a fullback in the past, we've shown that we always could carry four tight ends. However, to do that we usually have to carry eight linemen or five receivers.

I've got us at six receivers (Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Austin, Hurns, Wilson/Brown/Smith), and we could even go with seven there.

Then I've got us with nine offensive linemen (Smith, Williams, Frederick, Martin, Collins, Fleming, Sua'Filo, Looney, Ehinger).

Unless we went with seven receivers or three tailbacks and a fullback, we could keep a fourth tight end and still total 25 players on offense, or we could do it even with a seventh receiver/four RBs if we only carried two QBs. For now, though, I've got:

3 RBs (Elliott, Jackson/rookie/FA, Olawale)

3 QBs (Prescott, Rush, White)

4 TEs (Witten, Jarwin, Schultz, Gathers)

However, whether we keep 25 offensive players will depend on if we want to go heavy on defense.

Right now I've got at 25 on that side of the ball.

9 DL (Lawrence, Quinn, Crawford, Woods, Charlton, Collins, Covington, Armstrong, Hyder)

6 LBs (Smith, LVE, Lee, Thomas, Covington, March-Lillard)

10 DBs (Jones, Awuzie, Woods, Iloka, Brown, Lewis, Heath, Frazier, Goodwin, Thompson)

We could even keep Daniel Ross, or stay at 25 even if Gregory is given a reprieve, by cutting one of the two extra DBs or March-Lillard ... who may end up losing their spots anyway based on who we draft. I think we'll try to upgrade TE, S, DL and RB for sure in the draft so the spots for Gathers, Jackson, and Thompson are in jeopary, while the extra DL would probably force us to go with 10 and cut either Goodwin or March-Lillard (or again, go to two QBs or even cut Ehinger off the offensive line group).

With the three special teams spots, that should cover it.

Didn't we sign some new kid off the block TE this spring with less experience than Rico had when he decided he had a career in football? Sure practice squad material, just like Rico.

Yep Rico has size but needs some aptitude. Smoking reefer on a park bench and then saying he didn't know the rules may be a lot like his football aptitude... honest coach I didn't know I was suppose to block that guy :muttley:

Forgot about the marijuana issue. That alone might get him kicked out since he hasn't proven that his talent/potential outweighs any problems.

I have selected my pet cat for this offseason. And the winner is.

Wide Receiver Devin Smith
Devin Smith is a former 2nd round pick, #37 overall by the New York Jets from the 2015 NFL Draft. He's had some really bad luck with injuries, which have so far derailed his NFL career. The former Ohio State Buckeye tore his ACL in November of his rookie season, and then spent most of his 2nd season on the PUP list while recovering from knee surgery. Before the draft in 2017, it was revealed that Smith had torn the same ACL, and the Jets waived him on May 22, 2017, and he spent the year on injured reserve. Then he was cut in early 2018. He's spent the last two seasons out of football getting his knee well.

This situation reminds of another high pick in 2002 - OT Marc Colombo, selected 29th overall in the 1st round by the Chicago Bears. Like Smith, he tore up his knee in November of his rookie year, and spent the next two seasons on injured reserve, being cut by the Bears in September 2005. The Cowboys took a flyer on him in late November of 2005. He played a little on special teams, but never got a chance to play Tackle until 2006 - 4 years after being drafted by the Bears. He then went on to play 5 years as the Cowboys starting Right Tackle.

I'd love to see Devin Smith recover like Colombo did, and give the Cowboys 5 good seasons as a slot receiver. He's certainly talented, and now that his knee has had two years to recover, I'm curious to see what he can do. I don't expect him to beat out Randall Cobb. But it wouldn't hurt my feelings for him to beat out Tavon Austin and Allen Hurns as the backup to Cobb, and then take over the starting slot receiver role in 2020.

Here is the scouting report on Smith coming out of college in 2015:

6'-0". 196 lbs, 4.44s 40 yard dash, 6.83s 3-cone,

STRENGTHS
Smooth speed merchant with instant gas off the line. Has outstanding body composure and an effortless stride. Electrifying foot quickness. Game-breaking speed with necessary feel of a downfield receiver. Tracks the throw over his shoulder and never breaks stride in the chase. Averaged 28.2 yards per catch and 54.5 percent of his catches were for 25-plus yards in 2014. Used outside and from slot. Must be matched by speed on defense or with safety over the top. Uses shoulder dip from inside release to avoid being redirected by slot corner. Speed creates uncontested targets for him underneath. Can snap off dig routes and open immediately. Good luck giving chase to Smith on a crosser or speed-out in the red zone. Might have been the best gunner in college football.

WEAKNESSES

Lacks natural, soft hands. Will double catch and corral throws into body. Tries to catch, turn and run before securing the throw. Shows a lack of patience in his routes. Game too heavily reliant upon speed. Must learn to be effective when deep ball is restricted by defense. Thin hips and frame. Play strength is below average. Can be frustrated by physical corners. Gets jostled and distracted when bodied hard down the field. Desire lacking as run blocker. Often taken off field and replaced when Buckeyes wanted to run out of "11" personnel.

DRAFT PROJECTION

Round 2

NFL COMPARISON

DeSean Jackson

BOTTOM LINE

Smith isn't just combine-fast, he's game-fast and he would have had more than 12 touchdown catches during the 2014 season if he didn't have to slow down and wait on throws so often. Smith has the feet and hips to become much more than a deep-ball specialist and should be able to step right into a gunner spot on special teams. He still needs to learn his craft and improve his hands, but he has rare speed to score from anywhere on the field.

Smith may work out for the Cowboys, after all.

Best case scenario for my pet cat is practice squad unfortunately

I work at UNT so was hoping Guyton would show out but we are pretty deep at that spot and looks like he isn’t going to make it

Cedrick Wilson, loved the pick last year, think he has something
Jelks, like his build and think he could be a hidden gem with a season or two behind him

Great call by OP. I was pumped too when they signed this guy cause it wasn’t that he couldn’t play it was major injuries holding him back and not the Sean Lee soft tissue type injuries. He looks really good out there and has very good hands. Someone else compared him to Terry Glenn and I think that is a pretty good one. Might get backlash for this but if it came down to him or Cobb I’d keep Devin.
