I notice that usually when I see that the Pro Bowl voting is a joke it's a media member saying it.
How can it be a joke when TWO THIRDS of the vote comes from people that coach and play the game. The people that know the players and their abilities intimately.
The only reason the media thinks the voting is a joke is because THEY don't get to vote on it.
The players and coaches that vote often have a less valid opinion than many "fans".
A great many player votes aren't based on any actual knowledge. Some players have others fill out their ballots, some players vote for others that have no chance of being elected to help out a teammate who might, some players vote for friends or their agent's other clients....
Most players that do take the voting seriously are handicapped by playing in the NFL. They don't get to see a lot of other teams play as they're busy preparing for the team they play that week, not really concerning themselves with teams they don't play that season.
I'd like to see the pro bowl elections decided by a veteran's committee. Each team appoints 5 former players who vote in lieu of the active players. Each team would also have 2 votes decided upon by team officials. I think we'd have a much more "deserving" team every year under that scenario.
