What was your reaction to Big Ben’s suspension?
I thought it was just and Goodell knows a lot more than he’s discussing. Ben has had a problem with how he treats people … men and women, women most notably. He’s been a lout for far too long. You don’t get suspended for being a lout, but he needed a slap in the face and to have his life changed and I think that happened yesterday.
Do the Steelers just ride this out and hope he performs?
They ride it out. This is my guess … I talked to the Rooney on Friday and he told me they are going ahead with Ben as a Steeler. So the last few days I’ve looked at the rumors with bemusement, but I think its purposeful. The Steelers are sending a message to their fans and Ben that he’s about one jaywalking ticket away from being a Raider. I believe they’ll ride it out. I just listened to his attorney on another radio station say he believes the rumors are a media creation. I don’t know enough about the rumors to agree that they’re a creation, but I do think he’ll be a Steeler.
A primetime draft?
Much to the chagrin of some football fans, I think the ratings are going to be good and it will be permament. Goodell has said to his NFL people that they need to rethink everything they do … scheduling, playoff games, kickoff times, night games, draft at primetime, etc. So they came up with this idea, and it was to maximize the number of people that watch the draft. ESPN and NFLN will both get record ratings tonight.
Do the Rams trade the top pick?
Only if they get a package that gets them Clausen and two extra ones. It will have to be something outrageous. I see Washington leading the league in posturing and fake smokescreens. They don’t have a #2 or #3. They have one pick in the Top 100 in a very good draft. They would have to give up the farm in next year’s draft, and Allen and Shannahan are trying to build for the next 10 years.
Dez Bryant is getting a lot of talk here of falling and maybe the Cowboys moving up to get him.
That’s what I’m hearing. If Rick Gosselin says it, I’m buying. I do believe there is merit to that. I also believe he’s too good and not as troubled as people are being led to believe. He’s immature, but can you blame him with the life he’s had? I would be surprised if he lasts that long, but every year someone falls. It wouldn’t shock me.
Tebow and McCoy?
I know that both of those guys will be gone by the 43rd pick where Denver picks. Both of the go between 25 and 43. Tebow has more admirers. McCoy is loved by a lot of people in this league, but a lot of people don’t want to take a 6’1” QB. A lot of people are in love with Tebow as a person as a worker bee. If Tebow gets to the 2nd round, he won’t last long there. I have him going to Minnesota late, not that I really think he’s going to Minnesota, but when you do a mock and you get to the end of the round you just kind slot people and I’ve been told by a lot of teams I talk to that he’s going at the end of Round 1.
McCoy
At the Scouting Combine, and I’ve never met any of these kids, you form values on first meetings … and when he walked off the podium … the size, the body type, the confidence … he reminded me of Drew Brees. If you watched the Gruden show on ESPN,I thought it was terrific and Gruden at his best .. I’ve been lectured by him at training camp at 4 a.m. That’s who he is. He loved Colt McCoy and compared him to Brees. You have certain favorites … I love McCourtney from Rutgers and I love McCoy.
McNabb & Commanders
It will be interesting … just being more competitive in an ultra competitive division. Shannahan knew they were the 4th best team in the division and were going to stay that way with Campbell. I don’t know that McNabb moves them up to #1, but it gives them a chance to compete. But I don’t want to sugar coat it. The reason Reid traded McNabb is because the end of every season is Groundhog Day. He always comes up short. In the last two games against Dallas in the first 21 offensive series against Dallas he put 0 points up on the board. The QB has to come up big in big games and McNabb didn’t, but he does make them more competitive.
