Here is what I learned from this..or what he talked about

1) Tony Romo's future in organization: Jerry supports Romo. As an ex-scout Broaddus was there with Henson and Hutchinson and says Jerry doesn't want to move on from Romo without a plan. He said that their big mistake was not having a plan in place for when Troy left. So the goal is trying to find ways to help Romo....line, skill players, etc

2) Replacing Garrett: There are hard and fast questions Garrett has to answer. This week is usually when we do player evaluations for next year so through this week they are doing this. Next week is when Jerry, Stephen and Garrett sit and ask hard questions. Schemes, what went wrong, etc. Jerry supportive of how hard times handled but he isn't happy with football on field and wants to ask questions.

King says that from what he knows of Jerry that he likes to explore all options and is wondering if he kicks the tires on a Gruden and some others even though he respects Garrett.(something many of us have said..due diligence.). Says he would put $10 on Garrett being coach but not much more.

Broaddus says Sean Payton would have been one guy that Jerry would have looked at seriously. Once this went out the window then he had to think of keeping Garrett. BUT says that once he starts asking questions if he doesn't get the answers he wants, then he will do what he has to do!

3) Off-season-What changes to expect.

Cap situation isn't favorable. There are players that didn't perform...Doug Free...so maybe they cut some guys for space. Ratliff, etc. Says Defensive line has a lot of age and the guys playing in end were backups.

Draft is lining up well for us because lines and safeties are deep. Last 2 years they have added quality and draft and have to hit again this year. Doesn't see them spending in free agency.

4) Draft Process--King got to sit in years ago and was impressed with draft process that Cowboys do. Impressed with Broaddus, Ireland, Garrett's dad. Impressed with scouts talking for a full week pouring over players. So there are some misconceptions.

Broaddus says one weakness is Jerry is too good a listener. People influence him. He likes to gather opinions and when he gets bad opinions it confuses him a little in that he has to think a little longer on players during the draft.

Example: Parcells draft. Parcells wanted Merriman. Jerry was listening to others that wanted Ware. Jerry listened and made a good pick in Ware.

But when he gets misinformation, things can go wrong.

But he does good things. Gathers a lot of information. Scouts are good. Can do things better and Jerry admits he can do things better.

You can have bigger signing bonus and low first year salary to keep the cap hit low in year one.

Also may have to lol at a FA RT but doubt we have enough money for that.

I heard Norm talking about a Guard from Buffalo that was drafted when we had our disastrous 12 man draft that got us nothing. Said he has played every game and would be a solid find.

This is the one area that I think Garrett has definitely improved the process. Many of those misses were due to the Cowboys not doing any evaluation of the mental makeup of those players. Garrett has focused the process on making this a priority. He even hired an outside company that has expertise in this area.

The top 2 picks in the 2009 draft failed due to their mental makeup not their physical ability.

Brewster the OT, had good physical ability when in shape; however, he was not a hard worker and basically quit football

Jason Williams had loads of physical talent; however, they drafted him to do something that he had almost never done in college, coverage. In college he was a LB that played on or 1-step back from the line. The Cowboys didn't know that he was a slow learner because they didn't evaluate his mental makeup prior to the draft.

Garrett's answer to this question determines if I fire him or not. He better have a dam good explanation for me if I was Jerry.

Most of your proposed moves are cap neutral, many are cap negative, and they only create more holes that the Cowboys will have to fill without any resources to fill them. That's not even bringing up the opportunity costs that would go along with filling them.

"Cut salaries" -- well, duh. That's the case every year -- you dump guys who don't perform and that often gives you the money to sign other players.

But more importantly -- when you sign free agents, the contract structure is almost always very favorable cap wise in the first year (unless you have extra cap space to burn in the present year). A big deal for Spencer, for example, likely costs us much less cap space than we used on him this year. As another example, we signed Livings to a 5 year 18.7 mill deal. People were freaking out about that. His cap hit in 2012? 1.7 million. Next year it is 2.4 mill. The following year it jumps to 4.1 mill -- if we cut him then the hit is 2.1 mill. That's all pretty light cap wise. Even a team with cap troubles can afford that.

Why people make a big deal of that is beyond me. Our "cap problems" are something that talk radio and bush league reporters looking for a quick and easy template driven story rely on. Smart fans know better.
