10. MIKE MCCARTHY, DALLAS COWBOYS (9.7 – 7.3 RECORD WITH AVERAGE ROSTER)
  • Offensive Rank: 5/26 (+68 points scored a season)
  • Defensive Rank: 25/26 (+15 points scored a season)
While there were criticisms of McCarthy's play calling in Green Bay — he doesn't call plays in Dallas — he has had no issue helming prolific offenses throughout his career. His Achilles heel, however, is his seeming inability to oversee defensive performances that live up to his teams’ talent level.

I think this is very generous. They rank him over Sean McVay and Mike Tomlin.

So when it comes to defense Quinn gets the accolades and McCarthy gets the criticism?

Seems a little unfair, no?

He deserved the criticism after the Nolan hire. The defensive shot comings that year was just as much on McCarthy as it was on Mike Nolan.

If Quinn continues his success on the defensive end, McCarthy deserves credit for the hire imo. I think the article in the OP is indicating his defenses have not been constantly good throughout his career.

I think this is very generous. They rank him over Sean McVay and Mike Tomlin.
13. MIKE TOMLIN, PITTSBURGH STEELERS (9.3 – 7.7 RECORD WITH AVERAGE ROSTER)
  • Offensive Rank: 13/26 (+25 points scored a season)
  • Defensive Rank: 5/26 (-10 points allowed a season)
If this list were to consider how well a coach manages a team off the gridiron, Tomlin would undoubtedly be in the top tier. His defenses have been consistently strong, but he suffers in these rankings due to having one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL throughout his head coach tenure lead his offense without consistently elite results.

I think 10 is fair. I'd rank McVay higher for sure but LaFleur(his GB replacement) lower.

Tomlin is a really good coach but very similar to McCarthy his last playoff win was 2016. His true success was in year 2 and 4 with a SB win and loss respectively.
McCarthy won 2 playoff games in 2016 and has been winless since.
You probably couldn't find two more similar resumes.

McCarthy is at #10? He’s lucky to have had Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott to drag his butt up by 10 slots.

McCarthy entering year 3 as HC injury filled 1st season 6-10, the next season 12-5 this upcoming season will be big for McCarthy as he will need to do what no one else has done in a while and that is put back to back winning seasons up and I think it is imperative that this team advance in post season. If not then his job could be on the line. I'm pulling for him to get the job done. I'm more interested in end results than personality or weight.

McVay should be in the top 5. That's ridiculous.
I wouldn't disagree but LA has easily the best roster in the league.
It's not even close tbh.
But hard to argue with playoffs 4 out of 5 years and 1 SB win with another loss.
So this type of metric ranking based on expectations is going to rank him more harshly than just public opinion.

Not sure who they pay off, but people really need to start ignoring PFF. Their rankings are a joke. They swore that Dallas had the best Oline last year, and I heard people regurgitate the same nonsense on here and twitter. They couldn't run vs 4-5 man fronts for most of the year unless they were playing NFC East bums. That's why they let 2 starters walk and used a top pick on oline. STILL have weak spots at RT, C AND LT for half of the season.... You would have thought Diggs was Dwayne Goodrich last year if you didn't actually watch the games and just read pff.
