This to me was one of Mazi's best games. He was in the backfield seemingly all day and had more tackles than I can recall in any game prior. How they came up with this grade is completely beyond me.
I'm not sure why guys like the fan base believes all these rankings all the time without using their own eyes and making up their own conclusions because these PFF grades have been off all year even when they're positive for the players you want them to be positive for you really gotta take into account what you saw on the field and what really happened...

Every time I see a list a mock draft of ranking all the stuff coming from people that are using their own formulas to come up with their conclusions I just kinda blow them off as I've seen with my own eyes what players are doing in these games and what they're not doing and I'll make my own conclusions...

He had 2 solo and 1 assist. But I agree, from what I saw he was not that bad. I am curious how they judge DTs.
I think they use the same formulas for interior nose tackles as they do for three techs and that's just a really bad way of looking at it he should not be compared to guys like Aaron Donald or OSA because that's not his roll especially on this team are you here, he's not great but maybe he does have a future is a simple role player a guy you use sparingly as a rotational player and that sucks as a first rounder but it's really tough to see what a nose tackle was supposed to be doing and what he really did because they don't stand out much it's hard to find his number sometimes but I remember a lot of our runs the bigger runs in the last game was coming from the outside it was the cutbacks and stretching around the tackles the center of the field is a nose tackles job I'd like to see the statistics on how many times they ran the ball up the middle or you know off the guard off the center and those gaps versus how many times they broke him to the side because that's the ones that seem to be taking this team down more so than anything it's the mobile quarterback extending plays to the outside and the running backs running to the outside that be more on the linebackers and safeties and this team's been injured like big time in those areas...

Good analysis.

I would not be too concerned about getting pushed around by double teams. That happens to the best DTs in the league sometimes. But I totally agree that he plays too high at times. I think he relies too much on his physical strength and not enough on leverage. He also struggles shedding blocks quick enough.

But the one high hope I have for Mazi is that he is greatly improved over last year. He still has a long way to go be if he improves again going into next year he may actually be a solid player. It is up to him how hard he works at it.
I always want to be careful when talking about technique because we dont really know for sure how the coaching staff is expecting these guys to attack, but my concern with Mazi is I dont see anything change when hes getting doubled. Everyone is going to get beat by the double team now and then, but typically you'll see players try to dip the shoulder and split the double team, or plant both feet until and attack the primary blocker until the 2nd guy moves on to the next level, etc. Mazi just seems to continue to hand fight and bull rush no matter what is happening which opens him up to taking on two players at once which is always going to be a losing battle.

I agree he is getting better, hes actually had a few games this year Ive been really impressed with, and in some ways this is basically his rookie year, but how he is getting beat is more of a worry to me than that he is getting beat. Its somewhat encouraging that we can look at least partially toward a technique issue that could be coached up.....the other side of that sword is that we are about to start year 3 and still talking about technique issues.

They ran it 19 times for 80 yards going between the tackles, not including the QB sneak plays.

This idea that your DTs, even the noses are only to be judged by the middle runs is a bit outdated though. Its a league that is dominated by zone runs and isnt the north/south running styles from the pre 2000s. OLs are constantly moving side to side and that A gap that started middle of the field ends the play over on the hash mark quite often. These DTs need to be able to move with the OL because even the stretch plays we think are outside runs can often go right through the A gaps. Hes had some solid games earlier this year in this regard, Pittsburgh comes to mind immediately, but this is an area Mazi has been very inconsistent at and struggles with his foot speed. This week in the hand full of snaps ive watched hes been moving back instead of parallel with the LOS on these plays which can easily create those cutback lanes you referred to.

missed tackles in backfield which seems unfair to punish so harshly as he was not set and just throwing out an arm.
hes not gonna make anyone forget Leon Lett anytime soon but he wasnt trash this game.
