PFF’s take on how Gilmore can help the Cowboys. Here’s a snippet of the article:

—————————

“Measuring in at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds with 31-inch arms, Gilmore should fit defensive coordinator Dan Quinn's defense like a glove. Despite toiling away for a bad team in 2022, Gilmore performed quite capably, allowing 53 receptions from 84 targets (63.1% completion raw).
Historically, Gilmore has been one of the NFL's premier man-coverage cornerbacks, boasting a 99th percentile grade (90.1) in that facet since 2018. While Gilmore plays in press alignments routinely, he actually prefers to “soft shoe” at the line of scrimmage rather than stick a strong jam, as it allows Gilmore's process the receivers' release and stems to inform him of the routes the receivers are most likely to run. Gilmore will then institute some physicality to help him “feel” the route and match the receiver's pace. Moreover, he understands the intricacies of hand fighting, which enables him to limit a receiver's ability to create separation with subtle push-offs as they are coming out of their break. After that, Gilmore's notable timing and ball skills enable him to find consistent success at the catch point.”
——————————-

Then PFF goes on to talk about Gilmore’s football intelligence and savvy, before ending with this about him:

——————————

“Even though the 32-year-old Gilmore likely only has a couple years of high-end play left, the fact that he only cost the Cowboys a compensatory fifth-round pick is a huge win for the franchise, as it not only enables the Cowboys to have one of the better secondaries in the NFL but it also provides a two-year bridge for someone like Bland to develop to a point where he can be counted on as the every-week starter opposite Diggs.”

Here is Gilmore breaking down his film and talking about his thought process on the plays. It shows just how high his football IQ and his processing speed is on plays.

The guy is just a football junkie and has seen everything.

He is a definite upgrade over Brown, only cost us a 5th, and doesn’t break the bank.

I give the FO plenty of grief, but I’ll be the first to stand up and applaud when they get something right: This is an OUTSTANDING move.

Only negative I see is his age, but we still have some young CBs to develop on the roster, and can add to the group in the draft as well.

Very nice addition IMO

Yeah, it really was a crazy good deal for Dallas and is exactly what they needed this year. His influence will be great to have on defense.

It was a good trade for Dallas. Clearly, Gilmore is a talented CB; but am hoping his work ethic and football IQ trickle down to the young DBs and allow them to step-up their games and maximize their full potential.

Only problem I see is that in a couple of more years Bland will be nearing free agency.

He also likes to tackle.
Maybe that attribute will rub off on our other corner backs.

Bland already is a stout tackler. The safeties will hit you. Really, it is just Diggs that needs to pick it up in the tackling department.

If you’re saying it needs to rub off on Diggs… then, yeah, I agree.

When I sit and think about this, you're pretty much right.

The only bad thing is we get this guy on the downward trajectory of his career, pretty much no matter what, since he's 32 right now. Lord knows most of us here see he's still a young man, but that's approaching ancient-level in NFL years. If you could get another Doran Bland or have him . . . well, you'd probably go one, then the other, every other time. Because both ways make sense.

It's a safe move. I'll give them that. We still have holes to fill, and other needs.

We'll need some ballers going in to next year. Everyone is gunning for us, the 9ers, and Eagles, in the NFC, and especially the NFC Beast.
