PFF: Keith Smith Third Highest Rated FB

Clearly not. And if you were playing back in the days of leather helmets, the CTE would explain your posts.
Sigh...This is why I get frustrated with this site. I came back and some moron belittled me about the number of likes I have not accumulated and went off on a rant. Now this person believes the leather helmet rant is wise. Insults. Don't care.

I get frustrated with this site because clowns write things like "Because I understand football" and "I'm smart because I've been posting since the Eisenhower administration".

And then clutch their pearls when they get called on it.

Justify four TE's or shut the hell up.

He has done a good job, but is he a lock? If we keep Gathers and have 4 TEs on the 53 I can definitely see us going without a FB.

Swaim and Hanna are decent on the move but no one on the roster since Moose Johnston dug LB out of the hole better than Smith did last season.

WE have kept a FB every year Garrett has been here and the FB gets a dozen snaps every game. He is a lock.

On that note, why not use Rico as an H-back?
That is difficult mentally. I expect them to keep it simple for him in his 1st year playing in the NFL.

They didn't use MartyB in that role because it was to complicated for him.

Swaim can do it, whereas Rico could be better than Swaim as an inline blocker due to a big size difference.

I would certainly imagine Keith Smith is still well within his developmental stage, seeing as how he was converted into that FB role not so long ago. He'll probably continue to improve with some additional time and experience. His arrow is still pointing up. It's good to see him doing so well.

Justify why I shouldn't put you on ignore.
Lol. Do whatever the heck you want. I don't care. I will call out stupid ideas when I see them. That being said, you should probably move forward with the ignore idea, because I have a feeling you are full of gems like keeping 4 TE's on a team desperate for bodies on defense. We are stacked on offense.

I just went to check the rosters and it looks like its been at least five years since we did. And in doing so I just saw that we carried Tyler Cutts on the roster for three years, so I will now withdraw in shame and delete any posts I made doubting that Garrett will have a FB.

Garrett essentially tried going without a fullback in 2013 and the tight ends failed to be the type of lead blockers he wanted out of the backfield. That's when we picked up Clutts that December (when Dunbar was placed on IR).

Going without a fullback went against Garrett's approach, since he had previously stated that he wanted to find his Moose and lamented that he couldn't, and the tight ends not being able to handle being lead blockers out of the backfield kind of clinched that he needed one IMO. (I believe the new emphasis on the running game also has been a factor.)

Last year's approach, converting the two Smiths, threw me a bit because it made me think he wasn't serious about carrying a fullback anymore, but I think he only altered his mind-set some, deciding if he was going to carry a player who only gets a few snaps on offense that player needs to be a major contributor on special teams. Both Smiths were, so the experiment began.

Personally, instead of just kind of toying with the position, I'd rather see Dallas invest a draft pick trying to find a player like Juszcyzk, but I don't think Garrett feels he uses the fullback enough to warrant using a pick on one. Of course, if he did find a really good one who could not only block but also run with the ball and catch it, then there would be value in using the position more.

Dying position in the NFL. He's done a good job for the Cowboys. A lock for the 53 again this year.
I agree, and some teams still have one. if he can catch and flex a little, perhaps, its more of an H-Back that can lead block and pass block, which makes him more useful. that's what made Johnston good, he was great at catching balls out of the back field and get 5 yards, which was like a long hand off.

Bye bye troll.

Agree, I thought there was a good chance of drafting a FB. And I do agree its likely that we carry Smith for several reasons. He played well at FB, he played well on ST and Garrett likes the position just like people have posted in this thread.

But I don't cross over to saying its a certainty, IMO its one thing to carry a FB who only gets into a few offensive plays because he is a good ST player. We have developed the young talent on this team so that we have a ton more depth than previous teams at positions like LB, TE, Safety, etc. When you really come down to the final cuts and you have a pool of guys like Smith, Blanton, Swaim, Gathers, Tapper, Latouleli, etc - at that point most will be good ST players and you don't have that many spots. I could see that roster crunch working out so they use a TE at HB rather than carrying a full time FB.

Not predicting it will happen, but I just don't see Smith as a lock to make the team.
