What about a scenario where a guy like Chris Johnson is drafted late 1st, hes making very little and is breaking records left and right. You are asking him to burn his prime years on a rookie scale and once its up his career is half over.

I think they want to be able to keep their players, thats why the have the tag. But it has proven to be an ugly thing. Players hate it and its an overall lame way to do business. I think what they could do is allow teams to re-sign guys they drafted and give them some cap break on the contract. The player still gets paid, but he doesnt count fully against the cap. So if you draft a guy, he turns out to be a stud, and you sign him to a big money contract lets say only 90% of the contract counts against the books. A team like the Packers can keep all the studs they drafted and wont have to get into contract squabbles b/c it is really beneficial to them, and the player, for both sides to agree. It totally encourages good drafting, and agreeing to deals w/ said draftees

The NFL makes so much money I just dont see how they can justify holding down so many good young players. Give them a wage-scale probationary period to start with for sure. But after that they need to get paid if they have proven they can play

thats where the 2 to 3 year deal comes in, rookies that hit it big time, you can have a clause where they can restructure their contract, so you can restrict them so other teams dont get the player you drafted to build you team

thats the most important thing, not letting players walk after 2 years, if u did that, you wouldnt see hardly any teams in my opinion building a dynasty, but would be exactly what players want, total free agency so they can jump ship every 2 years or so, and get big contracts

the main issue is to prevent big time players like russell QB that ate himself out of the league, got big time guaranteed money, and set his team back, with salary cap hit, money tied up and no future QB

that has to stop, thats why there is a call for rookie wage salary, but you dont want to rob the teams that spend lots of money on scouts, their draft, etc, because you would be robbing that team of their resources to build their team through the draft, which where most teams are built, the draft
