The Cowboys have re-signed defensive end Anthony Spencer, which answers one question about Spencer’s future. Still to be answered is the one about when he’ll be ready to get back on the field after having microfracture surgery on his left knee last year. Spencer said Monday that he won’t be participating in organized team activities…http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=profootballtalk.nbcsports.com&blog=&post=2257005&subd=nbcprofootballtalk&ref=&feed=1

“It’s getting there,” Spencer said, via ESPNDallas.com. “I’ve probably got another month or so. When I had the surgery, they said it was a six- to eight-month recovery. I’m in the five- to seven-month range now. I just need to continue to get it stronger and stronger.”

I'm really not worried about him being back by training camp. I'm way more worried about him staying healthy and what type of shape he's in. After a major knee surgery like that I have to assume he's lost a lot of lower body strength.

My expectation is he starts the year on the PUP and works his way back into some kind of rotation after the bye week. Best case scenero is he gets healthy and can contribute during preseason so we know he is good to go in the season opener. By no means should we alter draft plans based on him.

Agreed.

His future is certainly not secure, and we won't ever be able to really count on the health of that knee. Statistically, he has about a 20% chance of returning to NFL caliber play, and even at that it may be for a much shorter time.

But is anything really ever certain?

Just death and taxes, bro's.......and an occasional foray off of the reservation by Mr. Jones.

Spencer will be far more valuable after the bye, so I wouldn't mind that one bit.

He will not be a PUP player. Either he's reay for the opener or i see him as a camp cut. Earlier in the offseason McClay said they were looking for guys who would be available every week. If they couldnt they wouldnt be considered. There no guarantees in his contract. This was a case of the Cowboys seeing as he's getting close to that timetable and signing him before he had a chance to go visit other places. If his knee doesnt respond he will be cut

Let's hope for the best, being put on PUP means he didn't even participate in camp and is gone for half the season. That's not cool.

The thing about PUP is that he doesn't count against the 53 and can come back midway through the season. So I can see this happening if he is not ready to go by camp or game 1. In that scenario, it beats cutting him as he can come in halfway through the season and contribute. He's not breaking the bank this year so the salary cap angle is no longer an issue or concern.

Good luck Mr. Spencer.... Limping the rest rest of your life ain't worth what you'll be making this year. Especially if you saved the 20 mil you made last 2 seasons..

This is the way I see it too, and prefer it this way. If he starts on PUP. Then why even have signed him.
A drafted player or even a FA find, another team camp cut would have just as much value at that point after week 6 or 8. When ever he could return.

Spencer - if you aren't ready by camp, that's fine. Just come back when you're actually ready, please.

And lose some weight. You were looking a little puffy out there last season.

knowing how brutal this sport has gotten lately, yea, if hes good by late season, do it, its sad but if its the way to remain healhty, other teams will do it, let him rest and be healthy for the stretch that matters most.

PUP is 6 weeks into the season; at that point the boys take a hard look and either play him or cut him.

It's cool to some fans for some odd reason. 3.5m to sit out half the season? What?
