Last week it was reported that the Seahawks expressed interest in a trade with the Chargers that would land restricted free agent Vincent Jackson in Seattle, but that the Chargers said no thanks. Now another team has been identified as a suitor for Jackson: The Washington Commanders.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune quotes an unnamed source as saying "several other teams," including the Commanders, are interested in acquiring Jackson from the Chargers.

However, it's not known how much other teams are willing to give up to acquire Jackson, or how much they're willing to pay Jackson, who apparently wants a new contract worth more than the four-year, $47.5 million deal Brandon Marshall got when the Broncos traded him to the Dolphins.

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith has indicated that he'll play hardball with both Jackson and left tackle Marcus McNeill, who also hasn't signed his restricted free agent tender. Both players are reportedly considering sitting out until after Week Ten, when they need to report to accrue a season toward unrestricted free agency.

The Chargers have "made it known" that unsigned restricted free agent Vincent Jackson will remain available for trade, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

"Several other teams," reportedly including the Commanders, have joined the Seahawks in expressing interest. Jackson is said to be seeking a long-term deal slightly above the four-year, $47.5 million deal (low on guarantees) that Brandon Marshall signed in April. No-nonsense GM A.J. Smith is apparently prepared to make good on his promise to move on without V-Jax and Marcus McNeil. At this point, a trade would be a lifeline for Jackson's 2010 fantasy value.

So basically the Deadskins are gonna overpay and overtrade for a player after he's had one good year and one pro bowl caliber year. Sounds familiar. Oh yeah that's how they got the majority of the players on their team. Deadskins will never be a contender until they start building from the draft like most contenders. You can't keep giving players big contracts after a good year. They have nothing to play for. You use the draft to build your team and before you know it you have a team full of hungry players looking for that big contract which will in result make your team better. You would think they would've learned this by now after getting Orakpo. Imagine if that team was built with players like Orakpo rather than players like Hayneworth? Now that's scary.

Report: Shanahan "a big fan" of Vincent Jackson

Somewhat buried at the end of a Tuesday blog post by ESPN's Bill Williamson is some juicy information on Mike Shanahan's background with Vincent Jackson, for whom Shanahan's Commanders are rumored to be contemplating a trade.


According to Williamson, Shanahan has been "a big fan" of Jackson dating back to the 2005 NFL Draft, when Shanahan's Broncos reportedly considered selecting the eventual Pro Bowl receiver. Williamson was covering the Broncos for the Denver Post at the time, so he's a credible source.


Williamson says Jackson was next on Shanahan's draft board when the Broncos selected the late Darrent Williams with the 56th overall pick. Jackson, who played at Northern Colorado, was drafted 61st overall by San Diego, "and the Broncos were not happy about it."


Jackson was relatively slow to develop in San Diego, but went on to post games of 95, 73, and 77 yards against Shanahan's Denver teams during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.


Interestingly, Williamson also "heard" that left tackle Marcus McNeill "may not be as dead set as Jackson on holding out for the long haul." Both players have threatened to sit out through Week Ten of the regular season.

San Diego Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson may be on the trading block.There has been talk for several days that Jackson could end up being traded. Teams that could be interested include Seattle, Washington, Chicago and Denver, although there is virtually no chance San Diego will deal Jackson to an AFC West rival.

I wrote earlier Tuesday that San Diego general manager A.J. Smith will not cave in this matter in regards to both Jackson and left tackle Marcus McNeill, who is also planning to stage a hold out.

However, if the Chargers can get something of value for Jackson and get the matter resolved, I don’t think that would be caving. That would be a sign of Smith showing he is in control and that he will ship players out of the loveliest city in the NFL if they don’t want to play by his rules.

I think San Diego could get some solid value for Jackson. He's is big, strong and fast receiver who had 68 catches last year and is getting better. However, there is a big knock against Jackson. He has two drunken driving arrests since entering the NFL and is likely facing a short NFL suspension in 2010.

Jackson is looking for a huge contract (think north of the $50 million Miami gave Brandon Marshall after acquiring him from Denver in April) and some teams may be leery of giving him that deal. Still, Jackson has had fewer legal issues than Marshall and did not create the team problems that Marshall created during his tenuous time in Denver. Miami gave two second-round picks to Denver for Marshall. Jackson could fetch at least a solid No. 2 pick.

I think teams like the Seahawks, Commanders and the Bears would all be willing to give up a nice pick for Jackson. The Seahawks and Commanders would also likely be willing to pay him what he wants.

I know new Washington head coach Mike Shanahan is a big Jackson fan. He nearly drafted him in 2005 in the second round when Broncos took the late Darrent Williams at No. 56. Jackson was next on Denver’s draft board. He went five spots later to the rival Chargers and the Broncos were not happy about it. The Commanders have long been known to spend big and to trade draft picks, and trading picks for Jackson could be a fit.

If San Diego can get good value for Jackson, and if it doesn’t think it can keep him for the future, they should make the move now.

As for McNeill, the San Diego Union Tribune reports he is not on the block because the team eventually wants to sign him long term. I have also heard that McNeill may not be as dead set as Jackon on holding out for the long haul.

The skins already have McNabb and Brown expecting massive new deals by next year, a top 4 rookie to pay, and a few of their own guys needing new contracts in a year or two. Let them give up some premium picks for another guy demanding a huge salary. More business as usual in DC.

well the difference is I don't believe RW11 ever really had issues, yaknow? I could be wrong.

Jax, he now does. Plus he wants a huge contract, with only one year left on his deal. Infact if SD gets just a 1 for him, thats probably fair since that other team will either lose him or pay an insane bundle of money.

I really have a hard time understanding why Snyder isn't learning from his mistakes. He simply repeats them over and over. To his credit, when the DO actually draft someone, they tend to get good players. But, they try to build everything from free agency and it gets them losing season after losing season.

I do not understand why he continues to do the same thing. If they get Jackson, its not going to change anything. McNabb has no history with the guy. Jackson will be above average, but the skins will still finish 7-9 or most likely, much worse.

That defense has overachieved the last few years. If it starts playing to its real talent level, they'll be no better than they were last year, even with a better offense.

Vincent Jackson is good, but he's not a world beater. Two games a year each against Denver, Kansas City, and Oakland. Inflation ruins the market! :
