PFT: Comments from Jerry Richardson, Jerry Jones suggest lockout is coming

Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reports that no negotiations are scheduled, a depressing reality with only 60 days remaining before the labor deal ends. Earlier today, Panthers owner Jerry Richardson expressed pessimism regarding the pace of the discussions. (Said the league in response to Richardson, via NFL spokesman Greg Aiello: “We understand and share Mr. Richardson’s disappointment in the lack of engagement by the union and the slow pace of the negotiations.”)

Perhaps the most telling observation in recent weeks drew far less attention that it deserved. In the web-only version of a 60 Minutes interview featuring Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, reporter Scott Pelley asked Jones if a lockout would be “disastrous” to the league.

“No. I do not,” Jones said.

He may be right, but it’s not something that any owner should be saying, in our view. It creates the impression that the owners are willing to force a lockout to get the concessions they want from the players. And it validates the rhetoric from NFLPA executive director De Smith that a lockout is coming.

I disagree. Jerry is too smart to say, "oh, yeah we feel it would be terrible and would do anything to avoid it"

.....high stakes poker. The owners have the money and the 'balls'...no pun intended. Too bad most of the players aren't exactly "savers" or they could win a stare down. Most wouldn't be mistaken for Dave Ramsey that's for sure.

Pretty much. The owners get TV $$$, season or not. The players get zip if there's no season, and many professional athletes live paycheck to paycheck. I don't know that the players could win a stare down, but they'd have a much better hand to play.

The players are going to fold. Like previously stated the owners have money and an empire to sit on, while most players probably can't survive a year without pay.

Honestly, the players have an incredibly sweet deal. They get paid MONSTROUS amounts of money. The players that are getting screwed are getting screwed due to other players making enormous amounts of money that they don't deserve to be making. (especially rookie contracts)

If I'm the NFL, I lock them out and not even return to the table until they admit they are ready to make concessions. Not only to the NFL, but to their own players. (both active and retired)

But how does it look to the TV networks that have to pay out the money regardless?

Or even more importantly the fans themselves? Jerry basically said that the fans are "marks" who'll follow the NFL no matter how shatty they threat them/us.

And secondly it's the owners, competing amongst themselves that have jacked up the salaries to the players. No one put a gun to Jerreh's head and said, "Sign Marion Barber to a $45 million dollar contract or I'll blow your head off".

But not having any negotiating dates scheduled isn't a good sign.

The owners should be making monstrous amounts of money. It's their team and they are the one who are most exposed. They buy the $1.5B stadiums, pay all the insurance, higher all the coaches, trainers, and medical staff. Then most off all, they are paying out $100M+ a season in salary to the players. It's a freaking business and the players work for the teams. The players aren't ownership that deserves a cut of the profiles. They get paid like every other working man, only their paychecks are in the millions while most Americans have five digit annual salaries. Most of the players are far more than fairly compensated. Those players can suck it up and help those players that aren't.

I say lock the players out.
