PFT: Cowboys have begun talks with Osa

It would be nice to get D-Law for one more year on a team-friendly deal, let Osa walk, and go after a real difference maker (or two) at DT. They don't need to overpay for him and this team desperately needs some interior threats. Not sure why they'd spend that kind of capital on a player that hasn't really helped with our terrible run defense. He does get some sacks for a DT, but is too inconsistent.

In other words overpay Osa, Rico, Lewis, Lawrence, and sign a bunch of low level free agents or guys that once had a name but coming off big injury to one year deals. Then signing Parsons to the the largest deal for a defensive player in NFL history, thereby Solidifying a future of continued mediocrity.
Nailed that one.

They break the bank to keep together what we already know isn’t good enough. No effort to improve.

They honestly seem to believe that paying players more money makes them better……and/or bad luck. Please.

Simply, they may be billionaire oil men, but they are in way over their heads at their hobby.

Agree completely. With a weak FA RB class Rico may surprise us and price himself out of Dallas, but I dont understand being afraid of paying Rico if hes in that $4-6M range. Lots of teams are paying their #2 RBs that or more. I think fans struggle to adjust to new prices as the cap goes up. Really we could both resign Rico for $6M, draft a RB in the 1st round and still have one of the cheaper RB rooms in the league.
I agree and that’s what I’d do. I’d draft a RB early as possible and take on Dowdle.

Exactly! They will overpay these guys and then tell us see, we are all in!

We’ve already talked a lot about how the Eagles have pushed an enormous amount of money onto the books of future years in the form of using void years. To see an example of what we’re talking about, check out each team’s most expensive void-year salary cap debts (data courtesy of spotrac.com)

It’s a crazy proclamation for a handful of reasons. For starters, the Cowboys have money. Without even having any insight into Jerry Jones’ investment portfolio, we know they have the money. There is no shortage of cash flow, and the Cowboys spend money. If you look at the last five years, the Cowboys have spent $1.25 billion in cash, $65 million more than the league average. Twice in that span, the Cowboys have finished in the top three for the year in cash spending. Make no mistake about it, Jerry Jones spends money on this team.

Lawrence wanted to like this post, but his hand got tired trying to click the thumbs up image.

It is interesting to me how many fans believe that an NFL draft will provide multiple starters capable of replacing the productivity of the previous players at that position.

The draft is deep in DTs, that is true. Is it deep in players that are capable of replacing Osa in the lineup? The 2025 draft is where you will find the 2026 season breakout players.

There are exceptions, of course, and these typically reside in the top half of the 1st round of a draft. Will the Cowboys use their #12 overall pick o select a DT? Will Mason Graham fall to them? Will they move down a little to get Walter Nolen?

This could happen depending on how the draft unfolds but even these blue-chippers will need time to acclimate to the NFL.

As far as the 2025 season is concerned, if the Cowboys lose Osa, any replacement will be a downgrade.

It sounds like this with get done.......

Cowboys have begun talks with soon-to-be free agent Osa Odighizuwa

My sources tell me their initial offer is:

21.99 bucks for 5 years. 14.99 of those is a bonus, reachable by playing in 6 SBs during that timespan.

Osa said he needs time to think about that. But his first tendency is: F you!

Everyone speaks out of both sides of their mouths when it comes to paying players. We get mad when they get a deal done early and the player doesn't live up to it, and say we should have waited. We get mad when we don't get a deal done early and the player plays well enough to deserve a bigger payday as the market goes up.

There's no real way to win, other than draft and replace, but you have to do that while the player is still on the low-cost/rookie contract. We can't do draft and replace because we're too busy filling existing needs to draft for coming ones. Then, you have to re-sign someone like Osa because you don't know if whoever you end up drafting will be better or worse.

I seriously doubt his agent used (F you)

Just me, but I can't see them resigning Osa ($17-20M ) AND drafting DT with 12. In other words, take DT off your board at 12 if Osa resigns, especially since Eberflus says he likes Mazi's potential.
DT was never on most people’s boards at 12 unless Graham dropped.
