The Cowboys took a look at former British discus Olympian Lawrence Okoye on Tuesday and liked what they saw enough to give Okoye another chance to extend his professional football career.

The team announced on Wednesday that they have signed Okoye, who had previous stints with the 49ers, Cardinals and Jets in his attempt to transition to life as a defensive lineman. Okoye saw action for the 49ers in the last three preseasons, but has not appeared in a regular season game.

Okoye’s mixture of size and athletic ability are obviously intriguing to NFL teams, but they haven’t translated to success on the field yet. That may prove to be the case in Dallas as well, but it won’t hurt them much to see if there’s anything that can help a thin defensive line.

The Cowboys also announced that they have signed linebacker Brandon Hepburn and tackle Bryan Witzmann. They waived defensive end Caleb Azubike, linebacker Jerrell Harris and tackle Justin Renfrow to account for the new arrivals.

Looks like we're churning the roster, trying to strike gold on that lucky find that delights everyone and actually makes a difference.

Gotta love it. Here's hoping Marinelli finds a way to glean something from him that other teams couldn't. It could happen! (maybe)

I definitely like the idea of not wasting time on guys who they feel the ceiling is too low to develop. Get them out and get some more guys in.

To the released players:

Sorry your NFL dreams are stopped for now. Continue to try to develop some skills and you may catch on later with this or another team.

Wasn't Okoye also a former boxer, or wannabe boxer, as well as discus thrower? Having a punch could be a strength with his conversion to OT.
