CHANCES ARE THAT CULPEPPER IS DONE

As of right now, the chances (we're told) of quarterback Daunte Culpepper returning to the Dolphins in 2007 are 60-40 against.

If the Fins were somehow able to finagle both David Carr and Trent Green, the number would shoot to, in our view 99.9-0.1.

The team's only concern is that, if Culpepper is still showing ill effects of a knee problem that was exacerbated by being rushed into the lineup at the start of the 2006 season, an injury settlement would likely be owed to him. And with a $5.5 million salary due to Daunte in 2007, cutting him and stiffing him could prompt a strenuous legal challenge from Culpepper's camp.

FINS SPLIT ON CARR, GREEN

A league source tells us that the Miami Dolphins front office currently is split on the question of whether to sign free-agent quarterback David Carr, or to continue to pursue a trade with the Chiefs for quarterback Trent Green.

The source also says that Carr's first choice for his first post-Texan team is the Dolphins.

And Carr could end up being the guy, given that the Miami Herald reports that the Chiefs now want a second-round pick plus another pick as compensation for the guy whom they undoubtedly will be cutting if they can't trade him.

"Trent is a Pro Bowl quarterback, he's thrown for 30,000 yards, he's a quality individual,'' Chiefs president Carl Peterson said, according to the Herald. "He's worth more than a seventh-round pick.''

But, apparently, he's not worth the $7.2 million salary that the Chiefs are scheduled to pay him this year. Thus, absent a trade, Green will be on the open market.

Our take? The pro-Carr crowd likely will win out. However, we wouldn't be surprised to see Green added to the roster when the Chiefs finally cut him loose. Green could start for a season or so while Carr learns the position better from the No. 2 spot -- a luxury he never had in Houston.

The wild card in all of this is the Lions. Though it's unlikely that they would give up a second-round pick, Green could become intrigued by the possibility of finally getting a chance to start for Mike Martz, since it was a blown out ACL (thanks to Rodney Harrison) that knocked Green out of the lineup with the Rams in 1999, and opened the door for the ascension of Kurt Warner.

If anyone needed a new beginning it is David Carr. I still think he lacks in leadership qualities but a new home and a new group of players around him may be a big help for him. Miami in my opinion would be a good fit for him

I kind of wish that free agency wasn't so scattered around. Not barking at the choice of Brad Johnson as our backup, but I would have liked a shot at Trent Green. Granted he's only 2 years younger than Johnson, but it would have factored into it for me.

Current out of work former starting QBs by my count.

David Carr
Joey Harrington
Drew Bledsoe
Aaron Brooks

Soon to be added?

Trent Green
Duante Culpepper

'Tis a time of change at the Captain's chair.

It's amazing how replaceable QBs have become in recent years.

Of course, there has also been a flood of forgettable QBs in recent years.

Cowboys all ready have signed the guy they wanted. Johnson outplayed Culpepper in Minn hands down.

Let's start the speculating!

When Culpepper gets cut -I think it's a foregone conclusion personally - where does he end up?

My best guess is Oakland.

Count Chocula probably has dreams of 60 yard Culpepper-to-Moss bombs down the field already.

yea, but he's a "shiney object" and people know his name.

ergo, he must be a cowboy to many.

I remember when everybody seemed to love Culpepper. On a message board the question would arise "So who do you want to be on the cover of Madden" and there would be 20+ posts wanting Culpepper even though he had already been on the cover just a couple years before. Then there were the guys who argued with me forever that Culpepper was a top 5 QB in the league before his last year in Minnesota. I've never understood the obsession with this guy.

I think that's because he was a top 5 qb adamknite. The dude was a monster the year he got beat out by Manning. The numbers were off the chart, and he was all but a civic idol in Minnesota. What's odd is how quickly he faded.

That and Moss was hurt for a good portion of that 2004 season. The Vikings started out the 2005 with some players injured and of course Mike Tice was still head coach.

Injuries can quickly take down a player. Culpepper is not fully healthy and may not ever be fully healthy. He was a pretty good QB when he was and it was not all due to Randy Moss. I don't see how anyone can say the guy sucks. He isn't the best of his era, but he is one of the better ones.

Green and Culpepper are looking to be the starters, so I don't think they fit in Dallas. Brad Johnson is used to being a back up and being older is closer to accepting that is his role. I wouldn't mind Culpepper if healthy and if he has the right approach that Romo is the starter.

I never thought he was a great QB. Espcially not top 5 worthy. He had one incredable year numbers wise but other than that he never showed me that he was an elite QB in the league, he wasn't terrible but he wasn't elite either. I have just never seen the greatness in this guys others saw.

It is hard to understand WHy..we jumped on Johnson so quickly

There were not a lot of options. There still really aren't. Carr has been added to the mix and now Green and Culpepper may be available. Those three guys come with question marks and are most likely still looking to sign on as starters, not back ups.

Green is almost as old as Johnson, has been solid in one specific system and coming off a big time concussion. Culpepper is re-recovering from a major knee injury. Carr is a Houston Texan.

Several other options still did not look too promising. It really starts to look bad when Tim Rattay becomes one of the best options out there.

Jerra can't resist a former "big name."
That is his pattern.
Though, at the time of th Johnson hiring, the pickings were slim, so perhaps that is why.
Jerra is set on Romo and that is good. He just wanted a serviceable backup QB, nothing more.

Because Johnson is exactly what Dallas was looking for. A vet who would not hinder the progress of Romo. Guys like Culpepper, Carr and a few others need as much work on their game if not more than Romo. I would not want Johnson as a 16 game starter but if I need a guy who can step up at a moments notice Johnson can do the job.

I never thought he was all that either. And I didn't really understand him being on the verge of being one of the faces of the NFL, based on how many league commercials he appeared in for a time.
The dumb little dance he did after throwing a TD told me a lot about him. He really seemd like an arrogant guy who thought pretty highly of himself. Like he had never graduated from high school, emotionally.
