First-round pick Dez Bryant will set foot onto the Cowboys' practice field in San Antonio this weekend after finalizing his rookie contract with the team on Thursday. In two-receiver sets at least, he probably won't be running with the first-team offense.

And he's okay with that.

"Don't get me wrong," Bryant said. "I would love to start, but I don't care about it. I just want to earn my playing time and do whatever it takes to help this team."

Bryant worked as the Cowboys' third receiver during OTAs, and is expected to supplant Patrick Crayton on punt returns. In Bryant's way for a starting job is Roy Williams, one of the NFL's worst wideouts last season. Williams struggled with separation and blocking, and dropped too many passes.

We suspect Bryant will eventually land on the Cowboys' first string because of his talent. It may take awhile, though. Teammate Miles Austin didn't begin starting until Week Five of last season, and Austin is arguably the best receiver in the league.

seriously? wow.

Good for him. He understands already that it's not about starting, it is about earning your role. This kid is rare I tell you. Going to be great because his head is balanced with his physical talents.

Any time after the bye week Roy11 will probably lose his starting job to #88.

The only way I don't see that happening is for the light to finally come on for Roy and he becomes what we all hoped he would be.

Either way I see this as a win/win situation for the Cowboys.

He is saying all the right things ....

And I guarantee you he is gonna fight like hell to become a starter.

Roy is in deep deep trouble.

Dez is definitely saying all the right things. Really looking forward to watching his career develop.

seriously? wow.

This writer didn't watch very many Bucs games last year. Roy Williams may not have lit up the stats page, but he was far from being one the worst WRs in the league.

you could argue worst starting WR.

Hope he plays better...and I hope Dez makes the kinda impact people is projecting.

I think that either

a) Dez Bryant will see highly increased playing time after the bye week.

b) Dez Bryant will start by Week 6, the trading deadline, because Roy Williams will be in another uniform.

He's being serious. I think he ranked up there with 3rd Wrs.

One of the worst STARTING WR's sure, but one of the worst overall? Not a chance, name one team that wouldnt trade their #4 WR for roy.

You can argue that by contract per production basis, Roy was egregiously the worst WR in the NFL.

Roy was constantly single covered, every play, of every game.

He didn't demand any special attention, routinely dropped critical passes, and chirped to the media quite a bit for such a mediocre player.

But lets not forget that he scored 7 TDs and he would block the **** out of your ***.

He'd make a better TE than Martellus Bennett. :laugh1:

That was my thinking as well.

No, he's not the worst in the entire league. After all, he isn't Jesse Holley.

But, as far as starting WRs, I think you have a very strong argument.

I just love how Dez is handling his business. He's really shown some maturity and focus through the draft/OTA's/contract issues/etc.

But of course this had to devolve into a Roy E discussion.

Worst starter? You can "make that argument" huh?

Okay. I'll play along.

I cannot wait for the excuses to roll in. Let's nip one of them in the bud right now. Not every team up there had awful QBs.

Maybe, I don't know, just maybe, it's time for people to watch other teams and see that not every WR in the NFL is a world beater. Contrary to very stupid opinions like Evan Silva, Roy Williams contributes to winning football in ways beyond catching the football. I know that will upset some mouth breathers. I don't care. Look at how bad they just got schooled.

Sigh...

Dez cares about starting he's a competitor he's just saying all the right things not wanting to make any waves. He received alot of criticism for things that happened in college and wants to come in and earn playing time and the respect of his teammates.

Like running incorrect routes, dropping easy passes, chirping to the media, and doing almost everything in his power to lose his QB's trust.

We saw who was on the field late last year, Roy started games - but when it came down to who gave us a better chance to win football games. It was K.O. or Pat.

You're all alone on this one. I know its a running joke around here that bashing Roy is beating a dead horse, but lets be real - if T.O. had performed like Roy had, and said stuff like "the QB throws better passes to other receivers" he would've been bbq'd.

He won't be a Cowboy in 2011, so why would the Jones' let a player go that contributes to so many victories by his downfield blocking?
