Eagles-Giants stays on NBC December 13

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 30, 2009 3:43 PM ET

The NFL has finalized its Week 14 schedule and announced that the NFC East showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants will stay in the NBC Sunday night prime time slot on December 13.

With flexible scheduling in place, the NFL can move weak games out of the prime time slot late in the season and replace them with better games. But with Philadelphia and New York both in the NFC playoff race, the Eagles-Giants game stays in prime time.

Fox and CBS can protect a limited number of late-season games, and a league source tells PFT that for Week 14, each network protected one game: Fox protected the Packers-Bears game, while CBS protected the Cowboys against the Chargers.

The only change to the schedule is that the December 13 Rams-Titans game on Fox had its kickoff time moved from 1:00 p.m. Eastern to 4:05 p.m. Eastern.

I might be among the few, but I always viewed the 1PM EST start time as the "prime" slot...maybe because I'm just so excited for football on Sundays.

I feel sorry for you that live in EST/EDT.

10 AM PST games are great. I wake up and put some coffee on. Check out some pregame and check things online. Next thing I know it is game time!

1:15 PM PST games are great. If the weather is nice I can play a round of golf or do whatever and have plenty of time to get home to watch the game.

5:30 PM PST games are great. If there is a good game on then I can watch it at the bar with friends or have the guys over for the game.

No time is too early or late on the West Coast!

So if the NFL wants to move the Dal-Was Sunday nighter to 1:00 EST, can NBC say no? Does NBC just have to do whatever the league says?

Apparently, you never lived out on the left (west) coast.

The 1 PM Eastern games start at 10 AM out there. In Hawaii and some of Alaska, the early game starts at 7 AM. That is an odd feeling if you are out in the land of grass skirts.

The later afternoon games do get covered better by more of the country.

Now if you are really overseas, like in the Middle East (Bahrain), the games start at 9 PM local time (they are generally 8 hours ahead of the US East Coast).

I'm pretty sure its up to NBC as to which game they want to show, within the restriction that it has to be a Sunday game not protected by the network that has the rights to the broadcast based on away team. Other than that I'm pretty sure they can yank what they want to.

Would hate to live out there. Love living in NYC/EST. I would not be able to enjoy a NFL game at 10:30AM. I would miss that game recovering from a wild Saturday night of partying. I don't like to Tivo games either.

I like the 4 pm games. I normally miss the kick offs to 1 o clock games due to over sleeping.

Figures CBS would protect it's Cowboys game vs. the Chargers. They only get the Cowboys twice a year. I wouldn't give either one up if I were them.

1 pm FOX games
Saints at Falcons
Lions at Ravens
Packers at Bears
Seahawks at Texans
Panthers at Patriots

4 PM FOX games
Rams at Titans
Commanders at Raiders

The Chargers-Cowboys game is the only 4 PM game on CBS that day. That will get them huge ratings.

FOX protected the Packers-Bears game because their first match up was already on NBC earlier this year. They don't want to lose that game twice in one season. Both teams still draw pretty well even if it is not great football and Chicago is still a major media market. Makes sense.

I agree. They lost one of their Cowboys regular season games last year when the NFLN broadcast the Ravens at Cowboys late last season, so no way CBS lets something like that happen two years in a row.
