ESPN’S PRIMETIME RETURNS, SORT OF

Posted by Mike Florio on August 20, 2008, 10:41 a.m.

Two years ago, when NBC assumed the Sunday night football package and ESPN upgraded (or, as the case may be, downgraded) to Monday nights, NBC also finagled the ability to have the only extensive early evening highlights show.

The effort, awkwardly dubbed “Football Night In America” and staffed with (at last count) 63 talking heads, has fallen short thus far of ESPN’s old “Primetime” show, which featured three things: highlights and Chris Berman and Tom Jackson.

We’re told that, during a Tuesday ESPN media breakfast that we were invited to attend but couldn’t (A.J. Daulerio of ******** has a great recap of the event), it was announced that Berman and Jackson, as of the start of the NFL season, will take over the Sunday evening SportsCenter, beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET.

The show will include NFL game highlights, but not the extensive packages available to NBC. However, it will be Berman and Jackson (and also Merril Hoge, Mike Ditka and probably Trent Dilfer) offering up their analysis of the games.

Though we wonder whether the apparent intent to conjure a Primetime Light might get the folks at NBC a bit nervous about whether their turf is being invaded, we love this move. For two reasons.

First, we missed Primetime. We suspect many others did, too.

Second, the presence of Primetime Light will likely force NBC to roll up its sleeves and try to make its own show better.

In the end, the viewers win.

Not a big fan of Berman but I did really like NFL Primetime. It'd be nice for them to bring it back. Even the replay music gets me jazzed.

Agreed. When I first saw that title, I thought it was a show about high school football.

Speaking of which, the NFL Network has turned to total crap. All they do is these dumb *** interviews and personal biography crap that I could give a rat's *** about. Yesterday, I had to listen candyass Steve Mariucci interviewing Andy Reid and talking about his two drugged up sons on my entire drive home. Yeah, like I give a crap.

i hope that they stream it online or at least have a station in Canada show it.

NBC is too boring and NFL Network is on too late. I want my hilight fix in between the late games and SNF

I don't understand why ESPN keeps Merrill Hoge around.

Is he part of some special work program?

I really hate watching football on NBC. I think it sucks. Not a fan of CBS either. I like to watch on espn, when it happened, or fox. Gotta love that lil robot that looks like a transformer.

I used to think it was so Sean Salisbury could be right once in a while but since Sean is gone, I haven't a clue.

Although its pregame show tends to plod along, NBC currently has the best overall football broadcast--announcers, graphical presentation, and music--of all the major networks and ESPN.

ESPN is the absolute worst. The announcing team lacks chemistry, and I really don't need an interview with Vince Vaughn or Jay Dee as I'm watching the game.

Edit: man you can't embed nothing on this site.

I loved Primetime.

Football doesn't seem right without it.

I don't understand why they took it off the air in the first place. It's not like it's expensive to produce. They already have the highlight clips cut up for Sportscenter. They got like 18 "football analysts" on the payroll, heaven forbid you put four of them on air for an extra hour a week to earn their salary.

You probably just like Andrea Kramer on the sideline and Faith Hill singing at the top of the show
