EXCLUSIVE TAG FOR ASOMUGHA

Posted by Mike Florio on February 20, 2008, 4:55 p.m.

The Raiders didn’t simply apply the franchise tag to cornerback Nnamdi Asomougha. According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, they’ve used the “exclusive” version of the tag, which prevents Asomugha from negotiating with any other teams.

As a result, the tender changes from the average of the five highest-paid cornerbacks based on 2007 cap numbers to the same average based on 2008 cap numbers.

This means that the one-year tender will be worth, at a minimum, $9.8 million. And if someone like Asante Samuel signs a contract with a big 2008 roster bonus in lieu of a big signing bonus, the number will nudge even higher.

The only player hit with the exclusive tag in 2007 was Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney. In 2004, the Raiders used the exclusive franchise tag on cornerback Charles Woodson.

Not surprised by this at all. If there was one player the Raiders couldn't afford to lose in the least 3-4 years it was this guy.

And, yes, I agree they are getting expensive.

The best way to get a bargain at cornerback is to draft one. Or two. The Cowboys should do that every year, much the way Ron Wolf and the Packers used to draft a quarterback every year.

Their value is apparent, so the sooner they re-sign Newman, the better.

Well said.

And I couldn't agree more.

In today's NFL, you can never have too many good corners.

And if you did, you could always trade them away for a king's ransom.

I think the Cowboys should draft not one, but two cornerbacks this year.

One to send Jockstrap Reeves packing, and the other as Anthony Henry's eventual replacement.

I remember when many fans - Eagles and otherwise - were saying that the Eagles didn't need to draft a corner because they had Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor (?), but Philly went out and got Sheldon Brown and Lito Shepherd in the same draft. Worked out pretty well for the Eagles. Of course, they didn't do much with them but still ...

Draft the best 2 corners in the first round. Wr 2nd. Give up the rest of the draft to get a second 3rd and get a WR and OL.

I do think we need to get 2 CBs on the first day; Henry is getting older and we have to replace Reeves.

and some people think 8 or 10 corners go in the 1st 2 rounds, 10 at least go
And it' going to happen all of a sudden, one pick with start the CB-parade.
