Maliek Collins agrees to two-year extension with Texans

Posted by Josh Alper on June 14, 2023, 2:17 PM EDT

Maliek Collins is the latest defensive tackle to land a contract extension this offseason.

The Texans and Collins’ agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha hammered out the terms of a two-year, $23 million extension in recent talks. The deal comes after the likes of Dexter Lawrence, Daron Payne, Jeffery Simmons, and Ed Oliver have landed new deals with their teams.

I’ll be honest man has he been good? This is the first time he’s gotten an extension? Had a very good rookie year here but haven’t heard much of him l.
I’d say typically you don’t extend a guy 23 mil unless he played well, right? On a team starting from scratch, if he wasn’t playing well, why not start over at DT too?

Depends on what we are calling good. He’s a pass rush first DT who is pretty mediocre to bad vs the run. Not that that’s a horrible thing but a pass first DL who gets 3 sacks a season would get obliterated on these boards if he were a cowboy.

Still he gets paid because there are so few really good DTs anymore as the game evolves.

He was better here than generally given credit for. He's the kind of player that would really benefit by having some power rotation around him. I thought he just got worn down here because we didn't have a lot of power playing next to him.

Haven't watched much Texan ball the last couple years but they must think he's doing OK.

He's become a better run defender.

From last year....

His stats here.......he actually had a decent 4th year as a Cowboy also. Not sure if we made him an offer or just let him walk. Of course, DTs do a lot of dirty work that never shows on stats sheets but from his raw stats alone, $23M seems a bit rich.

Not saying you're wrong by any means, I don't really have anything against Collins, but what the heck is Pro Football Culture? Is this ran by someone with some valid credentials or is this essentially a low budget PFF type of deal?

Just goes to show you the price of doing NFL business.

This stat line isn't worth 2 years, $23 million: 66 tackles, six sacks, an interception, a forced fumble, and five fumble recoveries in 30 games for Houston. That's 33 tackles and 3 sacks a year for $11.5 million. And it shows that those who think we can pay our guys $4 million to $5 million per year aren't living in reality. The Joneses go after players like Ronald Jones and Chumwa Edoga because there are reasons they are available for cheap that they hope they can overcome not because that's the market value for proven players.

Htown also has to deal with a salary floor and a dumpster fire of a roster no one wants to play for.

No i'm talking about before now. He's never gotten an extension until now and he's been on a few teams. SO I Assume he was good last year for the Texans to get a nice deal.

But its also worth noting these bad teams typically make these kind of signings because they have to spend the money and as of now I can't think of where the Texans have their money tied up in...
