His stats here.......he actually had a decent 4th year as a Cowboy also. Not sure if we made him an offer or just let him walk. Of course, DTs do a lot of dirty work that never shows on stats sheets but from his raw stats alone, $23M seems a bit rich.

You're right. I do remember him being decent that last year here as well. I think after his rookie season we wanted to see him take another step and he never did.

No i'm talking about before now. He's never gotten an extension until now and he's been on a few teams. SO I Assume he was good last year for the Texans to get a nice deal.

But its also worth noting these bad teams typically make these kind of signings because they have to spend the money and as of now I can't think of where the Texans have their money tied up in...
Sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time.......Texan see him as a perfect fit for their D. Good for him, he was never going get that kind of money here off those stats.

The loss of Maliek had a terrible effect on our run defense and eventually led us to using a 1st on Mazi.

Collins has played for two teams since he left the Cowboys. It’s not like the Texans are loaded with talent. All of a sudden he’s missed because he signed an extension with the Texans? Lol It’s not like we had a stellar run defense when he was here. Every time we made the playoffs our defense got us beat. I’m certainly not putting it all on him but there’s a reason we moved on from him.

Collins is a low end starter, but he's been an NFL starter for going on 8 years now. That doesn't happen by accident.

Just looked it up on Rotoworld. Out of his $23M extension, $20M is guaranteed. Damn. Good for him.

Maliek Collins agrees to two-year extension with Texans

Posted by Josh Alper on June 14, 2023, 2:17 PM EDT

Maliek Collins is the latest defensive tackle to land a contract extension this offseason.

The Texans and Collins’ agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha hammered out the terms of a two-year, $23 million extension in recent talks. The deal comes after the likes of Dexter Lawrence, Daron Payne, Jeffery Simmons, and Ed Oliver have landed new deals with their teams.
This is yet another reason why the Texans are the Texans .... dude is a rotational type who is nowhere near in the league of a Simmons, Lawrence or Payne.

Frankly we may have a guy that is just as good of a player in Osawaru Odighizuwa...

Kudos to Maliek's agents ...and Duuuuh to Texans ' usual management team ...

Outside QBs, ...DTs by account tend to be the hardest, most difficult positions to find a competent starter - even a decent one at times.

If you stubble upon a pro bowler gem, then you lock him up immediately for years to come ... Maliek for all his effort is not a pro bowler or not near one of the leagues best DTs .

Texans beg the differ .. but it's a reason why the Texans will remain the Texans..

He looked really good against Dallas. But that was the only time I saw him look really good. I am shocked he got that much money.

Depends on what we are calling good. He’s a pass rush first DT who is pretty mediocre to bad vs the run. Not that that’s a horrible thing but a pass first DL who gets 3 sacks a season would get obliterated on these boards if he were a cowboy.

Still he gets paid because there are so few really good DTs anymore as the game evolves.
Per PFF, his "good" seasons are around PFF 65.
Ok player.
Did up his tackles last year. Maybe he's improved on run defense.

Don't think so.
McCarthy has been pushing toward legitimate NTs and a swarm of rushmen since he got here.
And Maliek wasn't that good at run defense. He was an up the field DT, as Marinelli liked it.

PFF rated him 49th at interior DL in 2022 which is below Gholston and Osa.
Houston needed to retain him and paid him slightly below average starter money at DT.
He's been a solid NFL player but what fan is ever happy with just solid?
Not a bad deal for Houston who keeps him through his prime with only 23M total cost.

Lawrence's post 100 million dollar contract stats aren't exactly eye popping.
Well, unless you're into the non sack, edge setting/run stopping defensive end types for that kinda money.
*Sighs, rolls eyes and shrugs.

I always liked Collins and thought he was better than most Cowboy fans did, but I think this is a little bit of an overpay. While I think he is good and would be really helpful here in our DL rotation, I think he is lucky to be with a team with so much cap space over the next few years that they are just looking to keep together what they can over the next couple of years while they re-tool for the long run. Good for him and I wish him the best.

He has always been a pretty solid player. Wasnt productive when Irving was here because he was out of position. But his rookie and 4th year where very solid. He is probably about as good as Odighizuwa. Makes sense for a team like Houston to extended him. When you are that bad you need to keep every bit of talent you have
I'd take Osa but yeah. Nice player, good pick.
