PFT: Former No. 3 Overall pick Trey Lance to hit free agency

This isn't the same as drafting a player in the 4th round, although even those drafted in the 4th round are sometimes considered developmental and are definitely not considered as sure things guaranteed to get notable playing time.

The ability to use a 4th round pick to acquire a player that was considered as having 1st round talent is not the norm. Maybe 3rd overall in the draft was too high, but every team saw him as a 1st round draft pick.
A player that prior to NFL was considered top talent. Lots of players get evaluated each year and half fail in NFL.

Lance was in NFL for two years, got to play some games and practice a lot and get coached by NFL coaches. So this wasn't a draft evaluation. This was NFL evaluation. The fact that niners paid soooo much to go get him and essentially willing to dump him for nothing. Should have set off a bunchnof alarms....SF could have tried and held on and get more but people in NFL circles knew and this they dumped him for nothing....some teams were offering 5th or 6th roundnpicks.

And 4th rounders become contributors....like Ferguson, Schultz, etc. Just look at Cowboys 4th round picks.

It was a mistake and further more it was done without a plan in mind.

Sure players fail, which is why Lance was a developmental guy for the Cowboys and not certain to get notable playing time.

As for your comments about Lance, that is really irrelevant to the question of whether the Cowboys intended to play him, which was the topic I was in the middle of. Whether they should have traded for him at all is a separate issue.

Nevertheless, Lance was actually named the starter in SF going into 2022, but had a season ending injury in the 2nd game. After Purdy played well he didn't have a starting job to return to. Additionally, he only had 1 year of college experience because of Covid, so he was still very inexperienced. But nobody ever doubted his physical skills. Again, that didn't mean he was certain to play, but it's understandable why it was intriguing to bring him in and give him a chance.

As for 4th rounders becoming contributors, sure some do, including the names you mentioned. But it's pretty bogus to cherry pick those that worked out and ignore guys like Fehoko, Reggie Robinson, Jabril Cox, Josh Ball ... 4th rounders are not sure things to get any real playing time.

lol, you say it's too many words to respond to you and indicate it shows you live rent free in my head. Then you use just as many words as I did in response to me.

You just shot yourself in the foot ... lol
I accept that response as a concession to every point I made. I was attempting to respect your too many words with an appropriate respectful response, but you have proven respect won't be reciprocated by you. So, forget communicating with me because I am ignoring you.

You have an active imagination. A nonsensical one, but active.

Yes he was developmental. Bit IMHO you don't spend a 4th round on a developmental player.

And before he lost his job to Purdy he wasn't looking good at all. He was a top 5 project.

And he wasn't worth us paying a 4th

Now Cowboys done it again with Mingo because they had a 2nd round grade on him for the draft. Except there is a years of film on him in NFL and he needs to be regarded and based on his performance not worth a 4th round pick.

Both moves were stupid by Jerry.
