PFT: Former No. 3 Overall pick Trey Lance to hit free agency

True but I think its hard to believe Shanahan ( QB guru ) could hit and miss on a 1st round QB that much ( give up three 1st rounds picks.....damn )
When did Shanahan become a QB guru? He had Matt Ryan and lucked into Purdy. Also, Lance was a John Lynch pick. Sean Payton is more of a QB guru than him.

What an absolute waste of time and draft capital. They should’ve let him start when Dak went down to see what you have in the kid. If he bombs, so be it; at least you’d have high picks next year. But of course not. This team refuses to think strategically, always convinced they're just "hanging around the rim".

He'll have some interest this offseason. He's still young and "potential". Probably his last stop though if he still struggles though.

Another Jerry Jones gamble down the drain. Guy does not literally know when to hold and fold them, when to walk away or when to run.

I bet there is more interest in Lance than people think. He would be an ideal backup for a heavy RPO or read option team. Might even be a decent competition piece as a starter for a team like Indy. They have a shaky situation at QB as is, and Lance would be best suited running a similar offense as Richardson. Not saying he would win a starting job, but he would be perfect to push a young struggling QB without going after for a higher end/more accomplished competitor who might be split the locker room.
The Cowboys offered Lance an extension. So there is obviously other teams that have interest. I totally believe the rumors that the Cowboys did not play Lance to keep his value down. That is a dirty way of doing business.

Most teams want a backup with some significant playing time. Starts, playoff experience. Look at it this way. Kansas City’s and Philadelphia’s back up quarterbacks both have led teams to the playoffs, both have Super Bowl rings. That’s a back up quarterback. Trey Lance couldn’t start in the UFL. Might be a back up in the CFL.
Some do and some dont. For every Carson Wentz out there with a ton of experience there are also teams that went into 2024 with guys like Kyle Trask, Sean Clifford, and Spencer Rattler. It seems crazy to me to think that Lance wouldnt get a shot with an NFL team this offsesaon.

Lol should've been obvious. He was horrible in the preseason again 3rd and 4th stringers, but @jazzcat22 said he wasnt
Cowboys fans rejoice, the residence player personnel expert (well thinks he is) calls out another fan.
He has nothing better to post.

Fans will rue the day they allow this QB to walk away from the art museum, AKA, The Death Star / Jerry World.

What a waste of a 4th round draft pick. For a team that pride itself on building through the draft, they sure don't value their picks much do that?

I get the trade. Not a bad trade to risk a 4th round pick to maybe develop a backup QB, or a QB that showed enough to trade for another pick in return. But the Cowboys never showcased the guy or gave him a chance to develop as a backup. He did nothing his first year in Dallas. Was inactive almost his entire 2nd year, and looked inexperienced and rusty when they finally game him a chance to play a full game. At this point I am scratching my head over why they acquired him in the first place, and why they gave up a 4th round pick for him.

The 49ers gave his a legitimate chance to show what he could do. They tried to develop him and failed too. What made Dallas think they could do better? And why a 4th round pick and not a 6th? or a conditional pick based on whether he actually played?

Jerry is so bad at trades.

I dont doubt it one bit. The only good thing the Cowboys did for Lance was giving him all the starts this past preseason. Other than that he was basically used as a pawn in the Dak negotiations and wasted valuable developmental time by not starting him once the 2024 season was basically over.

If im Baltimore I sign him up and I use him 5 snaps a game . You can have him and Lamar on the field at the same time and get cute

Former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance to hit free agency after 5 starts in 4 years

The 49ers traded multiple 1st round picks for Lance and decided to let him go after watching him up close everyday in practice. The Cowboys traded a 4th round pick for him and let him go after watching him everyday in practice. Pretty sure he’s just not good enough to play in the NFL.

The moment Dak went down it should have been Lance starting. I never bought into the hype but why essentially sit him and waste a 4th round pick.

He must be beyond terrible if you can't work in a shanahan offense or start over Copper Rush.

My hypothetical Trey Lance only suitors targeting a potential 2025 Day One starter:
  • Titans (holding overall #1 draft pick) - Will Levis has played as well as a full-time starter as Lance in his limited career opportunities thus far. Could be an enticing lateral move on their part.
  • Giants (overall #3 pick) - Daniel Jones is out. Lance could be evaluated by the same masterminds who allowed Saquon Barkley to (lol) test free agency.
  • Raiders (overall #6 pick) - Not sure Lance could beat out their current quarterback room but never say never.
  • Jets (overall #7 pick) - The Aaron Rodgers experiment is toast. Same guys took a chance on Zach Wilson...
I do not see the remaining 27 teams offering more of an opportunity than Jerry Jones handed him, namely a pure backup role that--with a little luck--change into a starting position. And I doubt 3/4 of those teams will seriously entertain signing him as a backup option.

One of the most baffling moves in franchise history, really. More baffling then when they took Steve Walsh in that supplemental draft after they had drafted Aikman first overall.
