Framework for agreement could come in two weeks

Posted by Mike Florio on June 11, 2011, 10:46 AM EDT

Though it’s still way too early to claim that the lockout is “over” or “almost over,” the signs of progress continue to emerge.

The latest? Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal reports that the the “expectation is for a framework agreement in about two weeks.”

For the first time since the lockout began 91 days ago, a consensus is building that there is genuine optimism that owners, coaches, players and fans will be able to get on with their football-loving lives, and it could happen in the next few weeks.

CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman was the first to report reasons for optimism. Way back on June 2, Freeman wrote that "There is a still a great deal of work to do ... but it appears the owners and players have made significant headway in reaching a new labor agreement, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

"One high ranking member of the former union estimated to me a new deal would be reached within two to three weeks, if not sooner. 'This is the most optimistic I’ve been in many months,' he said."

Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal reports in the tweet above that the NFL and the former NFLPA may be moving towards a resolution in the current NFL labor negotiations.

NFL owners and players will have more talks on a new CBA this week.

Yesterday we carried a report from Gary Myers of the New York Daily News which indicated, a source described the recent negotiations as "A lot of good news. Right people, right format, right time. I still think there is a lot of work and a lot of details to work out. They both understand that after this it will become significantly harder to get something (done). It's the optimum moment for reasonable people to find reasonable solutions to problems that are not insolvable."

Also on Thursday, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said, "I think we're getting close to having to put this thing to bed so we don't miss any events. I know that's the intent on both sides, but it would be misleading to say anything that would not make it crystal clear that there's a lot of hard work still to be done. But the good news is we're talking."

A big thanks cowboyjoe and to Hostile and everyone else who has been keeping guys like me abreast of all the positive news coming from these talks. This all sounds great. Thanks!

I cannot wait for some NFL football! I really need this.

I think they need to let the players into the facilities as a show of good faith in these negotiations. It would be a morale boost for the fans, but more important to have some positive forward progress for the frustrated players.

Report: Deal could be in place in two weeks | National Football Post http://t.co/GYZZWbZ via @bradbiggs #NFL

After clandestine meetings during the course of the last two weeks, have the NFL owners and players edged close to making a deal?

Maybe.

Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal reported this morning that a “framework agreement” could be in place for the two side “in about two weeks.”

If that is the case, there would be ample time for free agency for veterans and the undrafted college free agents. Training camps would also be able to start on time, which would mean none of the preseason games would be lost. Yes, those preseason games mean revenue too.

It will be interesting to see if some type of accommodation is made by the league for the teams with new head coaches. They’re typically afforded an extra minicamp during the offseason. Will they be permitted to start training camp a little bit earlier than the other teams in order to get the ball rolling?

I thought you couldnt let the players into the facilities, unless a cba is signed, or a judge rules that they have to?

Earlier Chris Mortenson thought there might be a deal by June 30th, but now he has soured on that thought since the NFL and NFLPA only meet like twice in one week to have serious talks

Its pretty apparent that the SBJ has ties to more than one NFL front office if you have been paying attention to their reporting. Its a good sign that the verbage that the NFL is putting out is with this slant rather than the posturing we got for the previous several months.

My Steelers'-lovin father-in-law still thinks there won't be any football. I tried to explain to him that an agreement is in the works and could be signed by both parties in the coming weeks. He just laughed and said it wasn't going to happen. It's like talking to a brick wall. Typical Steelers' fan.
