I'm sure he COULD. But he doesn't gain anything if he does. The only one that gains something would be the NYFG. The Saints won't be holding him out so he doesn't meet incentives in his contract. They'll hold him out so they don't lose a first rounder.

Weird how two separate trades can turn out like this... Was this an oversight on their part or what?

No way I can believe they would old him out if the team is doing well. Late in the season, if they are making a playoff run and fighting for some advantage, you think they would really haul him off the pitch to save the pick? I don't.

Like someone else pointed out, if they don't want to lose the pick that bad, don't extend the contract.

Found this on the Jets board:

According to Newsday’s Tom Rock, the Jets will receive the Saints second-round pick in 2009 if Jonathan Vilma signs a contract extension and plays more than 85% of the defensive snaps and for the team this upcoming season. If the criteria is not met, the Jets will then receive a third-round pick and the Giants will get their original second and fifth-round picks. Now if the Jets do receive the Saints second-round pick in 2009, the original Shockey trade changes and the Giants will then receive a 2010 first-round draft pick, rather than a second and fifth-round pick in 2009.

Rock’s source tells him…

“That’s not going to happen because the Saints hold all the cards, and they’re not going to just give away that first rounder when they really don’t have to.”

I mean....it says he has to play 85% of his snaps AND get a contract extension....

Guess which one the Saints won't do.

I realize it says that. But the Saints traded draft picks for him. Do you think they're just going to let him walk? I mean if he plays 85% of the snaps, he's going to be a big part of a defense that was awful last year. And Vilma is light years better than the other LBs they have, and probably will be one of the best they've had in a while. It hasn't been easy for them to find LBs.

So rather than give up a young talent, why not just hold him out of some meaningless downs here and there, keep your first rounder, and solidify one LB position for years to come?

They could let him become a UFA.....then franchise him. I took it to mean he had to play 85% of the snaps and get an extension (while he is already under contract)....

If he becomes a FA; its a new contract.....then they can franchise him and work out a long term deal.
