The Cowboys know it’s a real possibility that defensive end Anthony Spencer will have to start the regular season on the PUP list as he makes his way back from microfracture surgery and he isn’t the only member of the defensive line that they’ll be waiting to see on the field.

Bryan Broaddus of the Cowboys website reports that defensive tackle Henry Melton will not take part in OTAs, which start Tuesday, or any other on-field activity this spring. Melton hopes to be fully cleared to participate when the team gathers in Oxnard, California for training camp this summer.

To be expected... I think that's about another six weeks.

Would rather have that then try to rush him and aggravate the condition. He is a pretty important piece we need for the line. If he is not available or is unable to return to form, the DL really will suffer.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with being cautious with his rehab at this point in the offseason.

However, this isn't good.

No, it is not good. They have work to do. Being that he was a free agent, then that could have contributed to being behind schedule.

I just hope we do not get into a day to day thing and then suddenly he Spencers himself out for the year.

Its been 7.5 months. The players that return to form the following season can practice at this point. Many can play.

I thibk the probability that spencer or melton return to form this year is low. Which is scary for tue dline.

Spencer, I am pretty much convinced does little to nothing. And if he is even a situational rusher who does not practice but plays good hard snaps on Sundays, it is a win.

If Melton does not contribute, that is a very bad thing considering we then are probably looking at Crawford as the 3-T. That position itself is extremely important to the scheme.

Bad news but too early to be too worried. Does make sense to the contract though.

It goes a long way towards why Marinelli said that Crawford was going to start inside.

Im not counting on Melton starting games until around week 3 or 4 or somewhere around there.

lol, I originally quickly read that as "Would rather have them try to rush him and aggravate the condition."

I would rather that than have him fight a nagging injury all season long. Also, it lets us get a better look at the draftees and Okoye.

Guys like Melton don't really need training camp, IMO. He already knows the scheme. He just needs enough reps to get into NFL playing condition.

I'm not sure he Spencer's himself out, but I agree the whole FA thing had something to do it. At this point, the big question is how behind is he considered.

Expectations for overall good health within the ranks of this team never merited great optimism from the get-go. This team was financially pressured to take chances on many players who were and still are physically impaired. I fully expect us to struggle with injuries once again this season. Until such time as our cap situation improves substantially, we'll still be walking a tightrope with respect to seriously improving our talent acquisition. At least the FO is setting its sights on being more stable. That's the good news.

This just means more time for the rookies to get acclimated and more time for the coaches to give instruction and figureout what we have with the fringe talent.

I guess I don't get the "Melton's not going to contribute until well into the season" talk... Just because he's not participating in OTA's.

Training camp is another nearly 2 months off...

Agreed.

There's already way too much over-reaction to Melton not participating in the OTA's.

Exactly... I have read nothing that would indicate that Melton won't be fully ready for the start of the season. Not yet anyway -- fingers crossed.
