Jerry Jones: “Accelerated approach” for Jaylon Smith after Anthony Hitchens injury
Posted by Josh Alper on August 29, 2017, 2:08 PM EDT

After linebacker Anthony Hitchens injured his knee last weekend, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said that the team wouldn’t change the plan for how to break Jaylon Smith into the lineup after he missed his entire rookie season.

Jones’ father had a somewhat different answer to the question during an appearance on “Shan & RJ” on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, however. Jerry Jones resisted calling Smith the starter and said that the team views Smith and Justin Durant as “one player” in terms of replacing Hitchens in the lineup, but added that Smith should be ready for more work than he would have gotten if Hitchens were healthy.

I really hope Durant is ready when he gets here and can at least survive half the season.

Jaylon needs some time, hopefully Durant can stay healthy til Hitchens comes back.

I know thats asking alot Durant.

Play Jaylon at the Mike in base and Durant comes in when playing nickel.
This is what it sounds like the plan is according the how they took reps at practice today.

Jaylon seems better suited for the nickel right now though. He's been able to diagnose and make plays in coverage. Squaring up and plugging the hole on runs is where he's struggled, and he'll have to do more of that in the base D.

I don't get this. One of Smith's strengths was his pass coverage. Now maybe the injury has sapped him of some of his skill set in terms of tracking RBs and TEs, but if anything, I would think you'd want Smith on the field in nickel and maybe Durant in the base.

He is overzealous right now, which is a severe disadvantage in coverage. But this is a natural tendency given his ordeal. Eventually coverage will be a gigantic plus for him going forward.

Durant balls out in nickel IMO. How many times has that guy laid out a made a big stop in pass defense? Smith needs to get that physical stuff down before they put him in space.

I know this doesn't mean anything to a lot of you all....but it really irritates me that Jerry and/or his son is declaring how any players role, playing time, place on the depth chart etc.....will shake out. Not news to most of you all that know me on here...but I never have/never will get used to the Dallas front office discussing on the field personnel, strategies etc... seems very amateurish to me.

The Cowboys play nickel most of the time though. I'm not disagreeing with what you say, just know it puts less of a demand on Jaylon.

He does it because he and his staff communicate and have a plan. You seem to be under the impression that Jerry is dictating on high what is going to happen without input from his football people... that's just not the case.

I am very aware of what he does and/or why. I just will never get used to someone other than the COACHES having these discussions publicly. He wanted to be the face of the franchise...and he got his wish...and the results speak for themselves. I just wish he would look in the mirror one day..and decide to do things differently....if he TRULY wants to win another title before his time on earth expires.

I don't understand the love fest for Justin Durant. He's a JAG. He's one of the reason Rodgers was able to make that sideline throw in the playoff game. He took a horrible angle.

Jaylon is a JAG right now, too. He needs to heal.

Did you just drop out of the sky oblivious to this preseasons events? The man was just inducted into the Hall of Fame and his team is the most winning-est team in the league history. I think this is a case where nothing will ever be good enough for you. Jerry has changed his ways for the better but what you are being irked about is a none issue that only ruffles feathers for you personally for no good reason. Better days are ahead so relax, Francis.

The GM has a say.
