While speaking to several hundred youth, middle and high school coaches Wednesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he has been accused of not having “the appreciation for how much difference a coach can make.” “That couldn’t be further from the truth,” Jones said. Jones must have forgotten his relationship with Jimmy Johnson ended when Jones…http://youwillnotrackme2.net/b.gif?host=profootballtalk.nbcsports.com&blog=&post=2464488&subd=nbcprofootballtalk&ref=&feed=1

Landry in 89 surely would have done better than Johnson and Shula.

I was very angry when it happened, but it was proven to be unquestionably the right move. (Though I'll grant it could have been handled in a bit classier manner.)

It's water under the bridge. It was the right decision. If anyone has a problem with Jerry at this point it should be for not giving Will McClay the official title of GM but Jerry's ego won't allow him to do that.

Firing landry was actually a gentleman's agreement condition on the sale of the team to Jerry anyhow.

I was always under the impression the issue was not that he fired Landry but how he did it. If I recall correctly, Landry found out from the press and not directly from JJ himself.
Yeah, I believe this is true. You can't treat the greatest American to ever live like that, which is a big reason I hate Jerry.

The entire firing situation is not really the issue but rather the WAY it was done more than THAT it was done........as most of you will remember the team was in a losing downward spiral and a lot of people also believed that a change needed to happen, we just didn't expect it to go down the way it did.

It would have been a more fitting end if Landry had just bowed out. I hated the way his career ended, but I like most of you, knew it was time. It should have definitely been handled different by Jones.....

Ive always heard that, but never understood it. Why did the old owner care if Jones fired Landry or not?

The prior owner got screwed hard by landry and schramm. They were disobeying orders and writing themselves contract extensions, etc. He wanted to fire both of them but never could bring himself to do it. When he went to sell the team, a condition was that they be fired. The prior owner actually intended to do it himself concurrent with the sale, but Jerry told him he would do it as a way to take some of the heat.

How was he supposed to do it?

Wait until Landry was back in Dallas and a multitude of rumors had surfaced?

On the phone?

To me, when the Boss comes to you, that's a show of respect. Most guys that buy a 140 million company don't go to the previous CEO's location. The CEO comes to them.

The media made it seem like something other than what it really was and Bum Bright, Tex Schramm and Landry were all much more media savvy than Jerry and let him walk into a PR disaster.

It was known that Jerry was buying the team and would be in town, but Landry decided to go to Austin anyway. That seemed odd to me.

Coach Landry was a great coach in an great era; he had to go, though, so another great coach could introduce another great era.
