Jerry Jones suggests Dez Bryant was overworked

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 30, 2010 8:42 PM ET
Reporters love Jerry Jones for the same reason that probably drives coaches crazy: Jones talks and emotes like a fan when things go wrong.

It's no surprise, then, that Jones wasn't pleased when told about Dez Bryant's high ankle sprain, which will cost the rookie 4-6 weeks. In fact, he nudged his coaching staff under the bus.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen writes on Twitter that Jones suggested Bryant was "overworked" and wasn't happy the injury happened on the second to last play of practice after all his reps and his kick return work.

"Got a feeling someone has gotten their butts chewed," Mort wrote.

Wade Phillips has a pretty sweet gig, but an unreasonable "butt chewing" or five from Jerry Jones every season comes with the territory.

same ole same old stuff zoners? espn trying to work up a controversy and story? or does anyone know anything different?

Sometimes, Jerrys as stupid as the most stupidest person I ever heard of.

Sure, lets let all rookies take the last ten plays off, and while were at it, maybe take em to Baskin Robbins on wednesday so they dont get there feelings hurt. And tell Roy to quite making them carry his pads, how unfair to burden a rookie with all of that.

Sheesh.

Good 'ol Mort has been caught with his foot in his mouth on more than a single occasion...don't give up the ship with each little ripple and wave.

Well at least he was already warmed up....being the last rep of practice.....

brings to mind when J. Hatcher got a pulled hammy by having the DLine coaches have them run sprints right out of the gate to start practice a couple yrs ago...........

butt chewing from JJ there also.......

Good ol Jerry just can't keep his stupid mouth shut...makes you wonder whether these past camps have been Camp Cupcake Wade or Jerry? For the love of the team Jerry, retire already.

why didn't he say something before the injury, crowd cheering too much?

You first.

How do we know that is what Jerry suggested if we can't read the quote? 2nd to the last play does not mean to me he was overworked. I bet Jerry didn't mean it that way either. He was probably talking about the timing, not the effort put in by the entire team. Forgive me, but I am very dubious about this.

The only thing overworked is Jerry's mouth....shut up Jerry, rookies need all the reps they can get... every headcoach in the NFL will tell you that!!!!

I'm with the others who said Jerry should shut the hell up... Unless Hos is right and Mort just overstated it.

But Mort is one of the very, very few ESPN guys I'd trust to be accurate on something like this.

Chris Mortensen stops at the Cowboys' training camp to talk with QB Tony Romo

SAN ANTONIO -- Dallas Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant will be sidelined the rest of training camp and perhaps for the entire preseason with a right high-ankle sprain.

After the team announced that its first-round pick will miss four to six weeks, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones questioned whether Bryant should have been participating so late in Friday's practice session.

Bryant was injured on the second-to-last play of practice in the Alamodome.

"It was really disappointing and it really causes you to ... ask what can you do, what can you do in practices that can mitigate some of the exposure to some of these injuries," Jones told ESPN's Chris Mortensen after watching footage of the injury. Jones did not attend Friday's practice.

Jones told Mortensen that Bryant might have been tired after a heavy workload, which included returning kickoffs and punts and running numerous routes with the first and second teams all week.

"The key thing is you ask yourself, 'Are we pushing him too hard; does it happen at the end of practice when the players are tired?'" said Jones, who added, "We all know now when you get a little tired you can get injured."

At practice earlier this week, Bryant tweaked his ankle and missed one or two reps while getting it retaped.

An MRI confirmed the team's fear of a high ankle sprain. Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones had expressed hope that Bryant, who had a spectacular start to training camp, would be out for only a few days or a week.

The Cowboys' top three picks are injured. Second-round linebacker Sean Lee has been sidelined since Tuesday with a strained quadriceps. Fourth-round safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, who had shoulder surgery in March, has not been cleared to practice yet.

"You hate for that to be, but I think Lee is close to being back," Stephen Jones said. "It's a long process and we have a long ways to go before the most important thing, and that's the Washington Commanders [in the Sept. 12 season opener]. You never like it when someone gets nicked or injured."

Bryant's injury occurred after cornerback Orlando Scandrick broke up a pass intended for Bryant. Backup quarterback Jon Kitna threw the ball slightly behind Bryant on a crossing route, and Scandrick made a good play on the ball and landed on Bryant's leg.

Bryant, whom the Cowboys selected with the 24th overall pick after trading up three spots in the draft, stayed down on the Alamodome turf for several seconds. He tried to limp off the field, then went back down before being helped off the field by athletic trainers Jim Maurer and Britt Brown.

"I guess he just rolled his ankle," Scandrick said. "I batted the ball away. I was just competing for the ball and I think his ankle was already bothering him a little bit."

Bryant starred during the first several practices of training camp, making the Cowboys hopeful he could be a major contributor for a unit that was second in the NFL in total offense last season. He has made several spectacular plays and has displayed a decent grasp of the playbook despite missing a handful of offseason workouts with a variety of physical ailments.

Bryant will miss valuable practice and playing time as he tries to recover from his injury.

"You don't like them to miss," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. "We do have an extra week [of training camp], which [Bryant] has taken advantage of, being here and learning all those things. He's actually done real well as far as assignments are concerned."

Bryant has been lining up with starters Miles Austin and Roy Williams in three-receiver sets, and the team is trying to develop chemistry between quarterback Tony Romo and the rookie.

"You're always concerned. It's the nature of our game," offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said of Bryant's injury. "It's a very physical game and that happens a lot."

I do not hear Jerry interpreting it that way in those comments.

Maybe that's just me.

Really?...you buying the media BS...how do we know what he really said, how he said it, and the entire context of it. Whatever JJ says and how he says it will be taken 100 different ways by a 100 different reporters. So therefore we will get 10,000 diferent reports.
And all we be negative reports.

Yeah, I guess you have a point. I suppose I'll just wait for Hostile or zrin to tell us what the official zone line will be on this issue before I go making my own opinion...

That is what Joe would do, lol.

Jerry is just like Steinbrenner back in the day. He gets frustrated when something bad happens and he has to blame someone. That makes him feel better and vents his frustration and it helps him deal with the bad situation.

Once he does that and cools down, which I'm sure Stephen will help him do, it's over.

But I wouldn't encourage Scandrick to go near him anytime soon. :)

Jerry just grabbed the mike in the middle to practice to address the crowd.

Has that ever happened in football before?

Did he say, "Throw your hand in the air and wave them like you just don't care" or "The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire" "We don't need no water let..."
