Jerry Jones: “We need more from Dez”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t want to talk about the future of wide receiver Dez Bryant, since the numbers on the payroll ledger don’t seem to add up.

But he did acknowledge that they needed more from Bryant on the field, because the numbers on the stat sheet definitely aren’t adding up.

During his weekly interview on 105.3 The Fan, Jones refused to answer a question about Bryant’s future. He’s due to make $12.5 million next year, and is coming off a 69-catch season which featured plenty of dropped passes but no 100-yard games.

Bryant blamed scheme and an injury he never got treatment for for his dip in production, and has rejected the idea of volunteering for a paycut. But it’s clear that something’s not right.

A hot topic for the Cowboys this offseason is the future of Dez Bryant. Bryant’s production has been slipping the past few years, and this year he had the most drops of his career, making him a target of invective from parts of the fanbase. Part of the problem with Bryant is he’s being paid like one of the very best receivers in the league, and his cap hit in 2018 is huge at over $16 million. For a player who is producing like a run of the mill receiver, that is too much cheddar

We pay this guy a full salary and we're idiots. Take a substantial cut, or be cut.
This isn't even debatable. Jerry is so dlfficult to listen to. I often wonder if he even believes the hot air that his mouth blows.

Wonder if folks actually read the article and what Jerry said?

Nobody ever reads articles, that’s lame.

If people read the article, Jerry just agreed with Dez’s recent statements.

People are going to hate it but Dez will be back next season. The salary cap is not going to mandate that we make a move and no GM likes dead money is they can avoid it.

The cost to cut Dez and sign a veteran receiver with 900 yard production will likely be substantially more than Dez’s cap hit.

Dead money is not relavent to the decision. They save a total of 12.5M in cap space by cutting him.

Dead money hits the cap with or without the player on the roster. It's money the player has already received but just hasn't been charged to the cap yet.

Only when a team is 100% maxed out against the cap and ALL contracts have been restructured would excellerated money have any significance. The Cowboys are far from that situation and will likely never be in that situation again with Stephen Jones handling the cap.

:hammer::hammer::hammer::clap::clap::clap::clap:I remember Parcell once being ask if he was ready to cut Greg Ellis ( notorious moaner and complainer ) whose numbers were down and salary was bit high. Parcell's response.......where am I getting my 9-10 sacks. Yes Dez numbers are down but they are still respectable and at least with him, you know what you have. This is why I keep saying he'll get one more year..........

You would get more from Dez if you used him right. I get that he's had plenty of drops the past couple of years, but that doesn't change the fact that he's been misused for so long.
Not the last couple of years..just this year. He had 1 drop total in 2016.

The reality is as fans we are not truly qualified to say how much of his decline in production is Dez vs a system vs Dak....or a healthy combo of all of these.

He isn’t going anywhere. As much as some fans want to play couch GM and pound on their man boobs acting like tough guys. The cost to truly replace him and the uncertainty the move would make means it’s probably better to keep him around regardless of full salary or not.

I hope the paycut works out, but the team has to maintain the threat that a release can still be an option.

And while people want to try to ignore it and say "he's not going anywhere", both of the Joneses alluded to changes being made. But most importantly, for a team that constantly reworks contracts year to year, they very purposely avoided doing anything with Dez Bryant's deal.
